“Yes!” Jack said, startling Roxy at how firmly he said the word. “She’s moving into my apartment block, on the bottom floor. It, it has easy access and ramps too. Since she’s moving in I’ll be over there when it’s time to eat so I’ll make sure she eats as much as you tell her to, and everything else I can do for her.” he said, clenching his free hand into a fist. “I’m going to do everything I can for her, even go beyond that when I have to.”
Doctor Brink had pulled the phone away from his ear a moment at the boy’s exclamation, his brows knitting together though a smile spread across his face under the thick mustache. “That is most excellent, Mr. Maple. Don’t overwork yourself taking care of her either or you might be the one putting your health in danger and then where will she be? Alone again.”
Shutting the file, the doctor put it away so he could concentrate on the current one before him. “So I do believe that will be all for now until she is released in a few days. She is healing quite nicely and all that is left are her legs, but being broken of course those shall take time. Thank you for returning my call, young man.”
“Oh I know how to manage my time and my energy Doctor Brink,” Jack said enthusiastically. “I paint for a living and I have so much work to do but I’ve balanced it rightly these past few weeks what with Katelynn and being there for her. I’ll be careful. I will. And thank you for calling me… though I think if you… if you find contacts for Katelynn’s family I don’t…” he hated saying this but… “I don’t think contacting them would be a good idea.”
