5 Days is a Long Time to Wait

will-never-be-a-swan:

“No aversions to food, no bloating, no tender breasts…no symptoms from the pamphlets..” Katelynn mused, lying down on the floor of her apartment, reading the pamphlets yet again that the woman at the pregnancy clinic had given her.

Katelynn had had her blood test a few days ago and today she was going to learn the results. Katelynn had kept an eye on things, being meticulous in the details of her symptoms and waiting for any sign that she was pregnant.

Nothing.

She hadn’t gotten her period yet and that worried her. She was a bit late and it seemed to be the only symptom she was really experiencing. She had hoped she was just late and it would come any day now.

Putting down the pamphlet, she sighed, looking over at the food mess in the kitchen. She had tried to cook herself breakfast this morning and failed miserably. God what a mess. It smelled too, like burnt…everything. Luckily she hadn’t set the alarm off in her kitchen. She was just trying to eat well for once, in case she had to eat for two people. She had been doing better, thanks to Jack mostly, but also because she had pushed herself to eat more, to gain a bit more weight and take care of herself. She didn’t want to lose the baby and make Jack suffer another loss just because she wasn’t hungry. That was just too cruel.

Standing up off the floor carefully, Katelynn took off random photographs that stuck to her back, leaving them back on the floor after looking at them. But one in her hand made her stop and smile. It was of her and Jack. They really didn’t take enough photographs together but in this one they looked happy and in love. This was before the car accident not too long after his confession. Katelynn still looked so shy with him.

Setting the photograph carefully down near the pile going on the wall, Katelynn went to gather her things in order to head off to the doctor’s office and see the results. Her hands shook as she went, afraid of what the results were going to be and how she would feel with either result.

She had just reached the door that would take her out into Metro City when she saw somebody waiting outside. She knew who it was instantly, the moment she saw the outline of his head, that familiar black turtleneck, and how his hands rested casually in his pockets.

How long had he been waiting out here? For her?

Jack knew the results were in today. And he knew she would be going. Rather then pester her with questions about when she would go, he had simply waited. The blue skinned man had watched the snow fall gently, barely worth mentioning as snow, but when he heard familiar, gentle footfalls he turned his head and smiled softly when he saw her standing there.

“Hey…” he greeted.
