Jack was, of all things, not a man who was good at hiding his emotions. Sure, he tried to appear not as nervous as he felt but it didn’t really work. Just looking at his green eyes alone would tell anyone how he felt. Still, he was glad to be meeting a new person. It was a good thing, widening his friendship circle little by little. “Nice t-to meet you too. S-sorry about the s-stutter it just h-ha-happens a bit.” he decided to tell her right off the bat as he held his hand out to her.

Well, that answered that question. Violet took a moment to brace herself, then clasped his hand and gave a friendly, though slightly awkward, shake. “Don’t worry, it’s okay. I understand you just fine,” she said with what she hoped was a comforting smile. “So, you wanna go inside? It’s kinda chilly out here.”

Awkward on both counts since he wasn’t the type to shake hands either. “T-thanks. And sure, y-yes! Good idea. Good idea.” he glanced skywards; there were some clouds overhead and there’d been talk of snowfall. So he walked ahead and held the door open for Violet, and once she was through he followed in after her, rubbing his blue hands together. “I hope you d-didn’t have to come far?” he asked.

He’d just been watching a family exit the art gallery when he heard his name being called, and he turned his head to see a dark skinned woman in a headscarf approach. Katelynn had described Violet enough so he knew what to expect, and to look for, and he smiled in what he hoped wasn’t a nervous fashion.

“Miss. Morgan…!” he greeted back as he stood up, grabbing at his backpack straps. “H-hello there!”

The trouble with meeting a mind-reader was that it didn’t matter what face you put on, your true feelings were easy to read. Violet picked up Jack’s nervousness, and it surprised her more than a little. “It’s nice to finally meet you,” she said with a mile. She wondered if he’d go for a handshake – she was still nervous about touching strangers, but she was getting better.

He had been surprised when he’d gotten texts from a girl he hadn’t known, because normally clients phoned him, or emailed him when they wanted to do business. Jack then learned the young woman’s name was Violet, a friend of not only Katelynn but Six as well. On top of that, Katelynn had told him, she was a bit of an artist too.

“You two should meet up!” she had said enthusiastically, smiling brightly. “It’ll be good for you to meet someone with similar interests!”

That had been a good point so, going against his normal ways, he had agreed to meet her. Where had they selected? The Metro Art Gallery of course. Jack was waiting outside in his usual dark colored clothes, turtle neck, leather jacket, jeans, shoes and a hat and scarf combo. On his back sat his usual backpack, full of various things though he pulled a water bottle from it and took a swig as he waited for the young woman to arrive.

It wasn’t long before Violet did so, quietly making her way from the bus stop. She didn’t look particularly remarkable – since she’d come here on a free afternoon, she was still dressed in the slacks and blouse she’d worn to work, under a hooded jacket. The only thing out of place was the unusually intense, focused expression on her face.

She was scanning.

Violet sensed Jack even before she saw him. Even if the thoughts were all new ones, the shape of the mind was still distinctive enough – she’d know it anywhere. “Mr. Maple?” Her shoulderbag bumped against her hip as she walked faster.

Dear Metroman

Dear Metro Man,

I hope you’re doing well. I haven’t seen you since that time Katelynn had those powers, and I’m grateful you helped her out like that. She has a good friend in you, I understand that now.

I’m sorry if I’ve come across as a jerk to you in the past. Given what I walked in on I think you can understand why. Unlike you, I’ve never had women fawning over me, or wanting to go out with me. Katelynn is very special to me, very special, and seeing her in the arms of another man just made me feel like I didn’t rightly deserve her.

After all, you have strength, good looks, and money. All of which I do not have.

Now I understand how things are, though, I realize the fault I had in feeling that way.

I hope we can be friends, one day, if not for our sakes then for Katelynn alone.

Good luck with Harrison, by the way. You two looked really nice in the photos I’ve seen of the Valentine’s Gala. You look really happy.

Jack

Dear future me,

Dear future me,

Did you get the tattoo yet?

I hope you’re happy, and the kind of person I want to be. Also I pray you’re living in a bigger apartment, in a safe place.

As long as you’re there for Katelynn and loving her, that’s all I hope that you are. Everything else can be taken in for consideration of course.

Do right by her, future me. You love and protect her like I say I’m going to.

That’s all I ask.

p.s. get the tattoo.

Your past self, Jack

Dear person I love,

Dear person I love,

How did I manage without you? How in the name of all things in this bright and beautiful world did I live? You have brought me so much love, support, and friendship I can not begin to thank you.

I know I may not be the strongest man in the world, emotionally as well as physically, but when you look at me in that way that you do it makes me feel like I could take on anyone and achieve anything.

You are my heart, my soul, my love, my life, my courage, my everything.

Sometimes I still feel a little scared that you will realize you deserve better. But that only makes my faith in you grow stronger, to show you just how much I LOVE you every single day.

And when the day comes I get to call you my wife, on that glorious day of white lace and tuxedos and speeches and parties and drinks, it shall be the happiest day of my life. Because you’ll be there, just as you always have been, only with a proper celebration to show just how much I love you, and will love you, for the rest of my life.

All of my love,

Jack

Dear future child,

Dear future child,

I’m going to hold you, one day. I’m going to be able to hold in my arms a symbol of the love I have for my wife, and look down at your face and see so many similarities. I know this is going to be true. I don’t know when you’re going to get here but something in my heart tells me you will get here eventually.

The world will feel a little scary at first. Even me, your dad, gets scared now and then of things. But I guess it’s a sign to show I’m still alive, isn’t it?

I hope you’re healthy, and strong. I pray that you know love in your heart. I also hope you have your mothers eyes… and your mothers skin but know that I will love, cherish, adore, provide and protect you with all of my being and will power. To me, you will be perfection.

One day I’m going to hold you and watch your first sunrise with you.

I look forward to that day.

Love, your father

p.s. you can call me anything you want. just as long as it isn’t a rude word.
