Strange 24 Hours

He chewed at his bottom lip, and looked away. “It is a s-scary thought…” it made any moment they had together their possibly last one. It wasn’t a nice thought. Jack reached over and placed his hand on her knee. “I, t-try not to think about it…?”

Katelynn did for the most part, every time she was at work and reminded about the portals. But she smiled at him and let out a deep breath. “I guess that’s all we can do..Bernard tried to comfort me about it and told me he didn’t think the portals would ever close but..”

She shrugged a shoulder, grabbing for her food again and tossing some of the bread for the birds to eat, watching the water move and rippling the image of the moon.

Jack nodded. He did his best to not ponder such things like that. So far his entire life had happened fairly ordinarily, nothing out of the ordinary either. He had found Katelynn and things just felt so much better for him. He felt braver. Stronger. Sure of himself. She did so much for him, did she know how much?

He moved closer to her, and he too tossed some bread to the birds.

They may be in different skin, but truly, nothing had changed at all. Certainly not his love for her. Nothing could change that.

Meeting Rim

“Me? O-oh. No. Not me. I’m an artist.” Jack explained quickly, shaking his head. “I’m j-just a blue skinned citizen. Nothing too fancy about me b-besides the, well. Blue skin.”

“That’s interesting enough, I daresay. In all my years, I’ve never encountered one. I’ll have to learn more about you— but for now, I have to run. Busy day, getting all settled in, you know.” [She drew a card out of her purse and handed it to Jack. On the crisp, cream colored cardstock was her number, embossed in gold.] “See you around, Jack.”

“Oh!” he observed her business card before pulling out one of his own, and handed it to her. “H-hope the city isn’t too crazy for you, Miss. Rim.” Jack said, hoping she settled all right. The city could get out of hand, from time to time, after all. She looked tough, though. She may be all right here, probably more suited for it than he was.

“It c-can get a bit heavy around here.” Jack admitted weakly. “And M-Metro Man can’t be everywhere at once…” though he possibly could with his super speed but that sapped the life out of him, making him age faster when he used it. Or that’s what he heard through the grape vine. “Though there a-are some people who fight against the bad guys too, so… so it isn’t too one sided.”

“Interesting. Are you a hero or a villain? That blue skin and all…” [Rim was glad that she was more than capable of defending herself, it sounded like this city was as full of ruffians, to put it politely, as it was of eccentricities.]

“Me? O-oh. No. Not me. I’m an artist.” Jack explained quickly, shaking his head. “I’m j-just a blue skinned citizen. Nothing too fancy about me b-besides the, well. Blue skin.”

Strange 24 Hours

“Maybe?” Jack asked. “I don’t. I don’t know. I mean, we’ve been to where I was raised. We didn’t go t-through a portal or… anything. I don’t..” he look down at his bowl of chowder. “I don’t think I am a Megamind…”

“No, I didn’t mean Megamind..” she whispered, putting her bowl of chowder down to lean in closer to him. “You’re not..I mean..I didn’t say they were either, I know they’re their own person just as you are. I just..kept worrying that if you came from a portal…that someday you’d disappear if the portals were to ever close..working at the museum..I’m learning so much about them..it’s a scary thought..”

He chewed at his bottom lip, and looked away. “It is a s-scary thought…” it made any moment they had together their possibly last one. It wasn’t a nice thought. Jack reached over and placed his hand on her knee. “I, t-try not to think about it…?”

“Lady Doppler? Sh-she’s able to fly and control the weather… so, really, prepare for any kind of weather in this city…” Jack said, sending a cautious glance skywards. So far the day was heading to be a normal day, weather wise. He looked back at the woman in grey. “Psycho Delic, well… he’s. Like a walking skeleton, really… w-with the power to turn to smoke at will and can poison people with said smoke. T-then there’s Hot Flash, a woman who has fire for hair and has control over fire. S-she can fly as well.”

[Rim’s curiosity was utterly piqued— what else could this city possibly hold? People with extraordinary powers, different skin colors… Although…]

“It must be dangerous here, with people like that running around.” [She knew exactly what it was like to have so much power that it runs away with you.] “I guess it’s a good thing there’s a hero here, eh?”

“It c-can get a bit heavy around here.” Jack admitted weakly. “And M-Metro Man can’t be everywhere at once…” though he possibly could with his super speed but that sapped the life out of him, making him age faster when he used it. “More or less.” Jack agreed, nodding his head. He gestured with one hand. “M-Metro Man on the side of justice, dressed in white…” then gestured with the other, “And M-Megamind on the side of evil, dressed in black.”

He shrugged, letting his arms drop back down by his sides. “That’s h-how it’s been here for a long time.”

[Rim rolled her eyes at the obvious use of colors to display good and evil. This Metro Man and Megamind sounded rather foolish already.]

“So… what about other people? This girl mentioned some to me earlier… Lady Doppler? Psycho Delic?”

“Metro Man? Blue? N-no. He’s human looking, ve-verrrry tall. He’s hard to miss s-since he goes around in cream and gold outfit and a cape.” Jack explained, before taking a few steps and pointing. “J-just down there is the Metro Man Museum but f-from here we can’t see his statue… but it’s very big.”

“Oh… So he must be like… like Superman then? A hero?” [This was starting to finally make more sense to her. How curious, a city that was apparently full of what seemed to be comic book characters.]

“More or less.” Jack agreed, nodding his head. He gestured with one hand. “M-Metro Man on the side of justice, dressed in white…” then gestured with the other, “And M-Megamind on the side of evil, dressed in black.”

“I guess y-you could call us a race…” Jack said with an awkward shrug. Most of the blue people were different, alternate, versions of the original. That being Megamind. But sometimes it was just hard to tell. Some assumed he to be an alternate Megamind but he had been raised outside of town his entire life, and he’d never gone through no portal to get here.

It was confusing since despite his large brain, he wasn’t a scientifically minded man.

“As f-far as I know there’s… several of us, at least. Including a clone, too… t-the main one though is Megamind, he’s. He’s the villain of the city, y-you know. Caught in never-ending st-struggle to take over against Metro Man, wh-who’s the hero of the city…”

[The same people that Katelynn had mentioned, interesting.]

“So this Megamind is blue, and Metro Man, is he blue as well?” [She looked around as though expecting to see another blue person pass right by them.]

“Metro Man? Blue?

Whoa hello, personal bubble well and truly popped right now. Jack’s face turns purple, tinting all the way to his pointed ears as this time he does take an anxious step back, face set in a worried look, especially after she so rudely touched his head like that.

“C-created? No! No, I. I was born. I, I had a mother and father j… just like everyone else, at least everyone else born normally…” he knew of clones, and robots, so… “T-there’s a few of us, going around actually … y-you must be new in town if you’ve n-never seen one of us before…”

[Finally recalling some propriety, Rim stepped back, giving Jack his space again.]

“There’s more? So is there a race of you, dwelling in this city? I’ve never seen another blue person in any city I’ve lived in— and I’ve lived in many, I can assure you.” [Though she had given his personal space back to him, she still stared rather uncouthly at Jack. She knew at once that she would enjoy living in Metro City, if it offered such strange specimens as this man.]

“I guess y-you could call us a race…” Jack said with an awkward shrug. Most of the blue people were different, alternate, versions of the original. That being Megamind.
