Metro City…

Of course she didn’t eaves drop.

Of course she went outside for some fresh air, leaving Jack and Sally to talk.

Though, not five minutes Later, not even that, Sally left the clinic. She didn’t even look at Katelynn, instead she hurried down the street and was soon gone from sight.

Well that had been rather fast. Katelynn blinked after Sally, wondering if something had gone wrong. She turned and ran back to Jack’s room, trying to be as quick as possible.

“Was…Is everything all right?” she whispered, coming to Jack’s bedside.

He was laying there, staring ahead, his expression fairly unreadable. Slowly, he blinks.

“She told me she didn’t want me going back.” he said quietly. “That she hears about the violence. That she’s scared for me. That she wants me to move back home, and never go back.” Jack pressed his hands against his stomach, gripping at the blankets. “She told me she loved me. That she’s loved me for years and that I just never saw it. I. I told her she should have just told me. That she shouldn’t have kept it quiet this long but. I told her I love you.” his eyes looked up to Katelynn, they were wet, but not crying. “That my heart belongs to you, and you to me. She said. Things. Against you and I told her to leave. If that’s how she really is to. To not talk to me again because I don’t want to hear those words against you. Ever. Because I love you. She called me an idiot, that. That the city’s changed me for the worst and, and that you’re bad for me. Then she said she hated me.” he tilts his eyes as best he can, trying to see the door.

“Then she left.”

“That’s okay…” he whispers, letting his eyes shut as she kissed his forehead. “I was… going to wake up… anyway..”

“Hi, Jack. Hi…” Sally greeted gently. “I just wanted to come see how you were.”

He turned his eyes to look at her, looking surprised by her presence. “O-oh! Sally, h-hello…!”

“Always getting into trouble.” she smiled softly. “But you’re being looked after well I can tell.”

Katelynn blushed, taking his hand gently between both of hers, watching Jack’s face. “Always. I’ll always look after him the best I can,” she whispered, ducking her head a little to avoid both of their eyes.

God but she still felt so awkward with Sally here. The woman had confessed something private and personal to her and she wondered what Jack would think of it. Perhaps…it would be best if he knew. Maybe then she could get over him?

Giving his hand a kiss, she let him go gently and walked to the door. “I’ll…let you two talk I guess and go get some water…I’ll be right back..” And out the door she went, her heart hammering in her chest.

Of course she didn’t eaves drop.

Of course she went outside for some fresh air, leaving Jack and Sally to talk.

Sally let go of him and took a step back as Jack’s eyes slowly opened. The man was foggy, half awake, half asleep, but he does hear Katelynn’s voice and turns his eyes to where she is, unfocused as he is.

“Hey… Katelynn…”

“Love…” she whispers, kissing his forehead gently. “I’m sorry…We must have been so loud…” She shouldn’t have raised her voice like she did but she had been trying to defend Jack to Sally, trying to explain how different and possibly better his life was in Metro City.

She decided not to mention the villains to Sally. Why worry the girl more?

“That’s okay…” he whispers, letting his eyes shut as she kissed his forehead. “I was… going to wake up… anyway..”

Sally turned her head away.

“I know that. It’s obvious isn’t it?” she looks back at Jack, watching his face. “The way I saw him looking at you in the market. I’ve never seen him look at anyone like that before. I used to want him to see me like that but all he saw me as was ‘one of the boys’. Even when I grew up, all he saw was the dirty faced little girl from down the street.

I knew if he went to the city he’d find one of you city girls. The fast moving ones. Quick to fall into bed, promising everything.” Sally looks at Katelynn, frowning. “If you turn out to be one of those women…” she started but stopped, since Jack suddenly began to stir.

“Nngh.” he groaned, hands moving. “What…”

Falling into bed quickly with him. Her heart leapt at her throat then, looking guilty suddenly. But when Jack stirred, all thoughts were on him.

“Love!” she cried, moving closer to him and peering down at him. “I’m sorry, did we wake you?”

Sally let go of him and took a step back as Jack’s eyes slowly opened. The man was foggy, half awake, half asleep, but he does hear Katelynn’s voice and turns his eyes to where she is, unfocused as he is.

“Hey… Katelynn…”

“So loved he fell off a roof.” Sally said quietly.

She looked down at him and sighed.

“I’ve had a crush on him since I was twelve years old.” she suddenly said.

A crush? She bit back a gasp, not having expected this development. Jack had told her she was like this was all the guy’s. Perhaps he didn’t know…Why was Sally even telling her this? To his girlfriend?

She bit back a retort, trying to fight the bile from her throat. God this was painful.

“He doesn’t…He loves me though…”

Sally turned her head away.

“I know that. It’s obvious isn’t it?” she looks back at Jack, watching his face. “The way I saw him looking at you in the market. I’ve never seen him look at anyone like that before. “I told him it was dangerous.” Sally mumbled. “That he belonged here, home, where he was safe. I mean. I know he’s been hurt. I saw a lot of it happen.” she reached out and ran her thumb against his eyebrow. “Figures he comes home and breaks a leg…”

Frowning, she takes Jack’s hand gently and stares at Sally. “It seems he was safer in the city. He told me…about his past…how he was treated…but with me and our friends..he’s safe and accepted.”

Looking down at his face, her eyes are filled with love. “He’s also so loved…by me..”

“So loved he fell off a roof.” Sally said quietly.

Sally narrows her eyes sightly, before looking back down at Jack and sighed sadly. “Poor Jack… you know, he was so excited about moving to Metro City. I could see he was scared, but he wanted so badly to see more of the world. To get away from here, to… to make a name for himself.”

“Oh but he has,” Katelynn mended, putting a hand to her chest. “People love his art! He does so many commissions for people and he even had his art up in a gallery!”

She tried to lower her voice, she really did. “He…he’s wonderful. He’s so brave and all because he moved to Metro City.”

“I told him it was dangerous.” Sally mumbled. “That he belonged here, home, where he was safe. I mean. I know he’s been hurt. I saw a lot of it happen.” she reached out and ran her thumb against his eyebrow. “Figures he comes home and breaks a leg…”
