Asking for Help

He just nods, before he wraps his arms around her tightly, pressing his lips against her forehead. She wanted to. She would say yes. He was so afraid she wouldn’t, that she had seen that it was pointless being with a man like him. That all he had wasn’t enough, that she deserved better than an introvert who painted his life away. But she wanted to stay… she wanted to be with him, when the time came, and… oh gosh. He wishes they were safe now. That there was no danger, no threat, that he could whisk her away from the villains and the bad guys and just be with her, loving her with every part of him.

It will happen.” he thinks to himself. “It will.”

She snuggles into him on the bed, enjoying this bit of peace for a while, already dreaming of a future together with the love of her life. They’d get through it all together. She was sure of it.

Technically it wasn’t a proposal, they both knew that; they were far too new to this but the fact it was a promise for a proposal made all the difference. He had gone silent when she thought; a part of him regretting saying it at all. What was he thinking, did he think this would really help? She was going to say no to him. He knew it.

…yet she doesn’t.

His green eyes stare back at her in equal shock, before a smile crosses over his face.

“Y-you… really? I-I mean when. When I can afford it and… and we’re… we’re not so wrapped up in… in all this… stuff… I will, I will…!”

She giggled lightly, happy to see him smiling again, her heart soaring into the heavens. “Ok..okay..I can’t wait for that day,” she replies, not really meaning it in the way that wishes he would ask her already. “I mean I will wait but when it happens I know we’ll both be so happy and ready.”

He looked down at her and the two silently observed one another for a moment or two.

“…w… would you, when… when and if the day ever comes… Katelynn, would… n-now I know people w-will say that we’re moving too fast but for all the reasons I’ve to-told you today and h-how much my life has changed since I met you I don’t e-ever want a risk of loosing you s-so…” he hesitantly touched her arm. “Y-you don’t have to agree but.. but… w-would you say yes that, when, when I finally ask you if… if y… if you would marry me?”

It wasn’t exactly a proposal. More like a proposal of a proposal. Asking if, when the day finally comes when he has a ring in his hand and is dressed up properly rather than in his pajamas, if the day comes that she would say yes to him and not out right reject him.

And thus he waited.

She gasped, not expecting this at all, her eyes as wide as the moon. Her body trembled despite the warmth. It felt like a proposal to her really. To a woman’s mind it was pretty much that. She knew it was a promise but it felt like since he was proposing to propose that it was more definite it would happen when in the past all it had been was musings for her.

It was too fast, in a slight way. But they had always done everything fast because of how right it felt. Their hearts had connected instantly as friends, best friends and lovers. They fit together so well it was amazing they weren’t already one body and soul, though in love making they were.

She thought it over for a while, though her heart knew the answer right away. Gone were her old fears. How could she still fear things when he was by her side? He did make her feel safe, despite how she had handled Psycho Delic. She had just wanted him safe from a knife wielding maniac. No point putting him in danger against something like that.

Looking deep into his eyes, her face a look of wonderment, she nodded, a smile melting on her face despite everything they talked about. “Y-Yes..Jack..Yes..Nothing would make me happier…”

Technically it wasn’t a proposal, they both knew that; they were far too new to this but the fact it was a promise for a proposal made all the difference. “I-it’s okay. It’s okay. A new relationship will, will always have bumps. But it’s the strongest one that g-get through them despite them all. I’m still here… a-and you’re still here… you’re all…. all I want, Katelynn and I don’t care if people are saying we’re going too fast or that we’re being silly but I really c-can’t see my heart loving anyone but you for the r-rest of my life…”

His arms are around her, holding her close, his eyes shut as he feels her against him. Her warmth, her heart, her whole being did so much to him. Not just his body, but his soul, his heart, his mind. Nobody else had ever touched him in such a way as she had in such a short time. His parents had tried doctors, head shrinks, group therapy to help him out of his shell but all it had taken was a long haired, beautiful, young woman to hold her hand out to him and ask him to come with her.

And he had.

By God he was grateful he did.

“…K-Katelynn…?”

She looked up at him at her question, eyes and nose red, tear streaks down her cheeks. “Y-Yes..?”

He looked down at her and the two silently observed one another for a moment or two.

“I just love you.” he whispered shakily. “I love you s-so much. It, it’s not bad of you to-to tell me when bad things happen. S-so I can be there and, and help you pick up the pieces and try to help you as best I can… y-you should have told me…” Jack said quietly. “A-all I can do is help with what happens after, I’m. I’m good for that… p-please don’t go. Please don’t leave.”

God it’s almost as if he could hear what her heart and mind had been feeling about leaving.

“I’m going to l-look after you as best I can. For as long as I can. F-for as hard as I can. Because you d-do make me feel strong, Katelynn… y-you make me feel like I could walk up to these p-people and tell them to leave you alone e-even if I know they wouldn’t listen to me. B-because you give me the strength to do it…” Jack pulled back, and caressed her uninjured cheek, eyes half lid, still red. “All I can do is love you, Katelynn. That’s what I can do.”

Despite it all, despite everything he still wanted to love her. He didn’t want her to leave. It brought a spark back into her heart, bringing it back from the dead as it beat in her chest for him.

He loved her. He wasn’t mad. He didn’t want her to go.

“J-Jack…your love is all I want..all I need..I swear..oh god..I swear it is..! You don’t need to be like anyone else but yourself! If you were anyone else I don’t think I would have loved you like I do..I can’t love anyone else ever! You’re the only one in my heart! The only one I need. My family..my only family.”

She moved into his chest, holding onto him tightly, head nuzzled in his neck. “I..I’ll try harder to stay safe..God…I want to try so hard so you won’t worry. I’ll tell you from now on if anything happens. I’m sorry..I’m sorry for lying earlier..”

“I-it’s okay. It’s okay. A new relationship will, will always have bumps. But it’s the strongest one that g-get through them despite them all. He groaned faintly, shutting his eyes, and shuddered. Roxy was still in his lap, voicing her concern for him, whimpering gently.

Jack’s eyes opened, red and watery, and looked at Katelynn for a moment before reaching for her hands, covering them with his shaking ones. “I wish I-I could keep you safe all the time. He lowered his gaze, the tears still falling.

“I want t-to give you everything b-but I feel as if I-I don’t have anything to g-give you and god look at me, g-going on…!” Jack looked at her, eyes wide. “Y-you were kidnapped you m-must have b-been so scared and here I-I am going on about m-my problems I’m h-horrible and—” he suddenly hugged her, Roxy leaping for freedom before being squashed between them. “Katelynn I’m s-sorry I’m so-so sorry…!!”

“Jack!” she groaned, her eyes shutting in emotional pain. “Stop it..it’s MY fault! stop apologizing for what I did! I’m the one who got captured! I’m the one who lied to you! I can never forgive myself for that! I keep hurting you and I’m sorry! I thought I was making you strong..I keep trying to give you strength, hoping my love is enough but all I do is make you worry and feel weak when you’re not!”

She clung to him desperately, shudders through her body. “I’m not..I’m a horrible person for making you feel this way..all I do is make you suffer. What kind of girlfriend am I?! I don’t want you to suffer…! P-Please stop suffering because of me..I’m so sorry too..!”

Her heart was breaking, going dead inside of her chest, feeling that even though it would hurt her, she wondered if it was best if she left. But the pain at the thought was too much. She didn’t want to! She loved him! Her hands trembled as they held him.

“I just love you.” he whispered shakily. “I love you s-so much. It, it’s not bad of you to-to tell me when bad things happen. His arms pulled away from her, his own wet, frustrated tears running down his face and he snarled in annoyance at them. Jack lifted his hands and wiped at his face roughly, shutting his eyes, shaking his head. “Stop crying. Stop crying. How old am I? Am I a three year old or a thirty year old? God, grow up. Grow up!”

Jack shook his head a few more times, taking deep breaths, but almost choked on one and spluttered.

Roxy suddenly appeared, leaping onto the bed, ignoring Katelynn entirely and whined as she approached Jack, ears down and whimpered louder as she sat on his lap. Jack didn’t touch her, instead kept his hands over his face, trying to get himself together. Trying and failing.

“W-why did you fall in love wi-with a man wh-who can’t do an-anything?” he asked shakily. “I-I can’t protect you at a-all…”

His words stunned her for a moment but the words inside of her heart were true and honest. They had existed in her heart for a long time now.

Bringing her hands up, she touched his cheeks hesitantly, as if afraid he’d reject her, searching for his eyes. “Jack…I fell in love with you because..if it weren’t for you I would be all alone. I love my friends but none of them have been there for me as you have. You worried about me, you DO protect me, you love me so deeply and you didn’t leave me despite what I’ve put you through or my sad past.

“You accept my flaws and still love and to me, that’s pretty amazing. I never thought I’d ever meet someone as wonderful as you.

“Y-You’re..pretty much the only family I have..I have no one but you..and if I lost you..I don’t know what will become of me..”

He groaned faintly, shutting his eyes, and shuddered. Roxy was still in his lap, voicing her concern for him, whimpering gently.

“So-so what can I do?” he asked, voice cracking. “Wh-what’s the point of me, K-Katelynn? What can I do…”

His words hurt her..pained her..not for her but for him, her lips trembling as she looked at him. He thought he was weak, she had done this to him. In not confiding in him she made him feel weak when she swore to make him see how strong he was.

“I-I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to make you feel like that..I didn’t! I thought..I thought I could do things..I wanted to protect you..I just want to be with you..please don’t think these things..please..! I-I’m so sorry..!”

She brought a hand up to wipe at her eyes, willing the tears to stop already but they continued their trek down her cheek. “L-Let’s move..I don’t want to lose you..I don’t..I’m so scared..!”
