T-t-thank y-you, Office D-dymond. That m-means a l-lot to me. [He pushes his paints and brush away entirely; the painting is done, for however quick and emotional it is.] I s-should let you go though. I-I’m sure y-you’ve got things to do, a-a-and I’ve got some work to fi-finish up…

Fair enough. [Gives a small shrug on her end of the line] Take care, okay? I’ll see ya around.

You t-too! Have a g-good day. [Smiles faintly before he hangs up and sets the phone down, before sighing and leaning back in his beanbag. Talking in front of a judge…? Ugh…]

[On top of that it would show what a drastic difference there was between him and the more famous blue skinned man running around causing trouble for the city. While he certainly looked a lot like him there was obvious differences in who they were. Important differences at that…] O-okay… I-I wi-will. I’ll t-t-think ab-about it…

[Relaxes a bit] All right. And you call me if anything comes up, okay? Even if you just want to chat [she adds, with a small smile]. You’re a good guy, Jack. [From what I’ve seen, anyway. Suspicion dies hard.] I just want you and Katelynn to be safe.

[His brush stops, and he stares at the colorful mess that this phone call’s brought on. It’s becoming darker, now, so he pulls his brush away from the canvas. Jack bites at his bottom lip nervously.] Um. I-I just d-d-don’t do w-w-well in f-f-front of… o-of… um… I… sh-she really w-w-would try an-anything I… [He sighs, shutting his eyes. He had to get a grip.]

[Man, this guy is really a mess.] Like I said, Jack, it’s your choice. We don’t know for sure she’ll try anything. I only thought you might want to be prepared, just in case. [Privately, she thinks his obvious nervousness would do a lot to help convince a judge that he needs the protection, but she’s not going to threaten the guy’s male ego by saying so]

Would I h-have to appear before a court to do it? [He’s sounds fairly nervous when he asks that; since he has no idea how this sort of thing is meant to go. Jack continues with the reds and blacks, the swirling mess looking very interesting now.]

[Bites her lip for a moment, hearing how nervous he is] You’ll have to speak to a judge, yes. It won’t be a big, formal hearing, though. Once you fill out the forms, you meet with them, tell them what’s happened, and they decide. [Waits to see how he’ll take that]

[He grins.] My mom is a-awesome. She’s never been the t-type of woman to keep her opinion t-to herself. But sh-she’s still mindful of people’s feelings. A g-good thing. [And then she mentions Katelynn’s mother, and Jack frowns slightly as he washes his brush.] Hnn. Y-yeah… she told me ab-about that. I only met her mo-mother once and it wasn’t a p-p-pleasant experience at all. [Now some reds, and blacks…] Very n-negative woman. K-Katelynn told me I should g-get a restraining order on her too…

“Negative”, heh, that’s a nice way of putting it. I was there when Katelynn met with her at the station. [Listens to the last part] Yeah, that was my suggestion. It’s up to you, of course, but it might be wise. I seriously think she’s unstable on some level. If she can’t go after Katelynn directly, she might try to get at her through the people she loves. I’ve seen it happen before.

[Jack laughs slightly, adding some blue and yellow to the painting.] Y-yeah? Mine did too… in fact w-when my mother first met my fa-father she slapped him right in the face. S-Six months later they were married.

[She laughs again. The talk of parents on his part gives her a little pause – she doesn’t know if he’s talking about human caregivers or memories of the world he came from. Again, she knows very little about the personal histories of most Megaminds] Your mom sounds awesome. And my mom ended up moving halfway around the world to be with my dad. But hey, it’s not a contest. I’m just glad you and Katelynn are happy. [Her tone becomes more serious] … Although, speaking of parents, did Katelynn tell you about the restraining order she took out on her mom?

[Picking up a paint brush he begins dabbling against a blank canvas; something he does, now and then, when on the phone to somebody.] Y-yeah not too long… but, you know. I r-really just feel she’s the one for me.

[Hesitates before answering] … Well, if you’re really sure. [Soft chuckle] I guess I really shouldn’t talk. My own parents did the whirlwind romance thing, so I know it can work.

[Jack laughs slightly, adding some blue and yellow to the painting.] Y-yeah? Mine did too… in fact w-when my mother first met my fa-father she slapped him right in the face. S-Six months later they were married.

[Pulls her knees up as she sits] Doin’ pretty well myself. So, I understand congratulations are in order for you and Katelynn!

[He laughs, digging against his jeans with his free hand.] Oh! Y-yeah…! You heard…! D-did Katelynn tell you?

Mm-hm. She made the announcement over lunch with some friends the other day. I gotta admit, I was kind of surprised – I didn’t think you guys had been together that long. [Trying to sound casual as she says it]
