“‘M…. so grateful I… found you…” Jack whispered in his half sleep, half waking tone, his eyelids already shut, his body already easing into calm. It needed to sleep, after the fall, the rush, the pain, everything else that had happened today he needed to sleep.

But he felt her besides him. Pressing against him gently.

He normally hated hospitals. But this stay… he could get through this, as long as she was here.

“‘love you.” he whispered before drifting into unconsciousness.

“I love you too..” she whispered, knowing he couldn’t hear her but knowing he knew. She always tried to tell him when she could, and when she didn’t, she’d always show him somehow.

Leaning up, she gave him one last kiss before settling down again, her mind wandering without him conscious to keep her company. She thought about the future, about Jack and herself, what needed to be done. She knew they could face the future, because they had each other.

“Because you give me strength,” she whispered, her own mind shutting down for sleep, cuddling into his side.

He smiled.

“That sounds like a wonderful plan. I like that plan.” Jack smiled up at her before his eyes began to gently close. “A new… life with you… falling asleep next to you and… waking up next to you… the small… things in life…” he was falling asleep, slowly.

She heard the sleepiness in his voice and smiled gently, leaning down to place a gentle kiss to his lips. “Yes, love..Yes…Get some sleep now, okay? I’ll be here…I’ll always be here by your side…watching over you…”

Being careful, she settled down against his side, one arm wrapped gently around his middle, face pressed into his arm. She began to hum for him again, pulling another melody from memory, this one without words.

By his side, that’s all that mattered to her.

He smiled softly and lifted a hand to push it gently through her hair, pinning some behind her ear.

“Oh Katelynn.” he whispered. “I. I’m glad I can be… be a source of bravery for you… more then you possibly know. I mean. Me? Brave? Strong? I’ve never felt like those things in my life until you came into my life… now, now you telling me this… thank you. Thank you so much.”

“I just hope you don’t think I’m only saying them to say them or compliment you,” she whispered back, eyes closing as he stroked her hair. “I mean every word…”

She paused a moment, wishing she could cuddle him but mindful of his injuries. “And when you get out and Rapunzel heals you…We can start over again…getting our new apartment and being brave together, making new friends and laughing together.”

He smiled.

He blushed purple at her words, and squirmed gently in the bed, wishing to move, wishing to really look at her but knew he couldn’t thanks to his neck. Stupid neck brace. Why can’t it be four days already? Instead his hands pressed against her gently, trying to convey how much the words touched him because, truly, they did.

“I’m just. Used to the pain like that. I know it sounds horrible but, but this got me through this. Having you there got me through it so-so calmly because I saw you looking so afraid, so scared. I can’t. I can’t be the source of your fear, Katelynn. Not now, not ever.”

She picked herself up even more so her torso could straddle him, one hand on both sides of him as she peered down into his eyes. Her face was one of sereneness, eyes filled with love. “I wish I could say the same about myself…but seeing you be so brave..it makes me want to try harder for you. To stop crying at every opportunity. You’re my role model for that it seems,” she said, a smile melting across her face.

Leaning down, her lips brushed against his cheeks so softly they were like a whisper against his skin. “I’m trying so hard…to be like you..”

He smiled softly and lifted a hand to push it gently through her hair, pinning some behind her ear.

He hummed softly at the kiss to his forehead.

“Brave? Why?” Jack blinked at her, eyes wide with surprise and curiosity. “All I did was fall off a roof…” how was that brave?

She smiled softly, staring down at him. “You can’t see it I guess but I can..You were the one in pain yet you stayed calm. I was a mess when I saw how hurt you were and I was fine,” she tried to explain, hoping this information helped, though to her it was true.

“And not just today but I can just…see everyday how calm you are..you don’t buckle under pressure like I do. All I can do is cry about things but you…you pull strength from somewhere and give me kind words, soothing words…You’re brave, Jack. You are. I admire you so much.”

He smiled faintly, and since he couldn’t move his head to kiss her he lifted a hand and pressed a kiss to his palm, before pressing his palm to her cheek gently. “It could have been. For… for that I’m grateful I mean. I can still feel everything. That’s… pretty big, seeing how far I fell. But let’s not talk or think about that.”

“Sorry..” she apologized gently, scooting slightly closer to his body but still being as careful as can be. She brought a hand up to lay across his stomach but used the one on the bed to pick herself up, pressing a kiss to his forehead and down his cheek and chin.

“You’re still the bravest person I know..”

He hummed softly at the kiss to his forehead.

“Brave? Why?” Jack blinked at her, eyes wide with surprise and curiosity. “All I did was fall off a roof…” how was that brave?

“I’m still going to be here until they let me go… that will be a few days at least, and they won’t want me on a bus for too long either…” Jack mumbled as he touched her, holding her close, loving this even if his state of body was in such a broken state.

“I’m sorry Katelynn.” he whispered, quietly. “I ruined this.”

She shook her head rapidly, a small groan escaping her lips. “No l-love! No..You didn’t, okay? At least..I mean..at least I can still be here with you..right? That has to count..We’re still together..It’ll only be a few days..just a few…It could have been so much worse and it wasn’t.”

He could have broken his neck in the fall. God she didn’t even want to picture the result of that.

He smiled faintly, and since he couldn’t move his head to kiss her he lifted a hand and pressed a kiss to his palm, before pressing his palm to her cheek gently. “It could have been. Jack wrapped his arm around her as tightly as he could and held her close to him, still unable to move his head properly thanks to the neck brace he still wore but being able to hold her… that’s what mattered.

“Is she the one who fixed your legs?” he asked quietly, as he brought his other hand up to touch her hair gently.

She squeaked lightly when he brought her close, trying her best to adjust her body on the bed so she was lying next to him, head laying on the corner of his pillow.

“Y-Yeah the same…Rapunzel. She wants to heal supers but I’m sure if I pay her she’ll heal you too. Just as soon as you’re out, as soon as we can go..” It was almost as if she were trying to convince herself things would be okay. She bad to believe she could fix this as soon as possible.

“I’m still going to be here until they let me go… that will be a few days at least, and they won’t want me on a bus for too long either…” Jack mumbled as he touched her, holding her close, loving this even if his state of body was in such a broken state.

“I don’t, but I believe in life lessons.” Jack replied gently. “Katelynn… come here..” he holds his other arm out to her, wanting her to move closer to him so he could at least kiss her.

She looked at him like a little injured animal but still got up and sat down on his bed, being careful not to sit too close and risk hurting him. Her wonderful man, how it pained her to see him like this…

“Don’t worry,” she whispered. “I know someone who can heal you and I’ll ask her as soon as we can go back to Metro City for her to heal you, okay?”

Leaning forward, she touched her forehead to his.

Jack wrapped his arm around her as tightly as he could and held her close to him, still unable to move his head properly thanks to the neck brace he still wore but being able to hold her… that’s what mattered.

“No, no…” he reaches and takes her hand into his, holding it gently. “This is what happens when I let myself get mad… this is a lesson. Don’t feel bad, please.”

She looked up at him, sadness swimming in her eyes. “I thought you said you didn’t believe in karma..”

“I don’t, but I believe in life lessons.” Jack replied gently. “Katelynn… come here..” he holds his other arm out to her, wanting her to move closer to him so he could at least kiss her.
