Hungry? She looked through the pamphlet for another sign. Aversion to food’s you never avoided before.” She wasn’t hungry but figured Jack might be. “Let’s go eat..” she replied softly, completely absorbed in the information she was reading.

His mind might have been a hive but her emotions were as well, different ones coming in and out, unsure of how to feel. She knew they’d have to talk about this but felt he needed time and food would probably help.

Jack hadn’t eaten all day. His stomach was craving for something and yet at the same time it wasn’t. He didn’t know what was wrong. He wanted to call his parents. He wanted to ask his father what it felt like when he realized they would have a child.

Oh God. That was another thing Katelynn didn’t know.

That Jack had once had a baby sister. But she’d been born sick. She hadn’t lived a week, and oh god the memories suddenly rush back at him and he wishes they wouldn’t. Not now. Not here. His hand tightens against Katelynn’s.

“W-what are you i-in the m-mood for?”

“T-Thank you,” Katelynn replies, taking everything. “For your information and the appointment.” She looked down at the card, feeling even more anxious. She’d have to wait 5 days..that was a long time to wonder. Until then she’d have to listen to the signs, to see if she showed any symptoms.

She began to walk from the counter, knowing there was nothing else she could do here, opening up the pamphlet “Signs You’re Pregnant” to read the facts.

There’s the nauseous one…missed period…mood swings… Katelynn rolled her eyes. Yeah, mood swings was definitely one. Her period wasn’t set to come for another few days, probably after her appointment so that was going to be hard to tell.

She hummed, still reading and still very worried.

Jack thanked the woman also and gently placed his arm around Katelynn’s lower back as they exited the building. He looks down at the papers that Katelynn’s holding, before looking ahead of them again.

“A… are you hungry? We could get something to eat…” he offered lamely.

His mind was a hive. So many thoughts. All flying at once.

Katelynn nodded, feeling the pit of her stomach fall out. She would have to wait for a few days, living with the anxiety and questions of wondering. To her credit she hadn’t felt nauseous or any of the symptoms so maybe Jack was right and the test wasn’t to be trusted.

“Yes, please book me for a test. What day and time?”

The woman writes down on a card a time, in five days time, and hands it over to her. “Here you go, and…” she picks up a few pamphlets about what to expect if you’re pregnant, the early signs and what not and hands it over to her. “Here you go…”

Comfort

She wasn’t sure about super sperm and she looked at Jack a moment, biting her bottom lip. He was an alien so maybe? But her eyes widened at what the woman said. “Wait a few days? There’s no way at all to tell? I don’t think I can wait that long..”

Jack certainly hoped he didn’t have super sperm. What a horrible power! Impregnate women in the blink of an eye? Good God!

“I’m afraid you’re going to have to,” the woman replies. “We can offer you a pamphlet with some further information if you like, and our card if you want to book a blood test?” she offers.

Katelynn blushed deeply, surprised by the question for a moment before scolding herself. She should have figured that question would come up. “U-Um..l-last night…I took a pregnancy test and it read positive so I just..wanted to make sure..”

“Well then sweetie if your boyfriend has some kind of super powered super sperm,” the woman said, “you can’t tell if you’re pregnant this early on. It takes at least a couple of days for the sperm to reach an egg, if there is one, to fertilize it. You two will have to wait a few days. If you miss your period, then you can most certainly come back to see if you’re pregnant or not.” she explained gently, seeing the worry on both of their faces.

“T-Together,” she said, squeezing his hand back gently, still completely afraid. She wasn’t sure how to feel about the whole situation or the results when they would come in. She had dreamed of one day being a mother, of being a better mother than her own, but being completely afraid of her ability as a parent.

But she just wasn’t ready for one right now or to have one out of wedlock. Even if she loved the father so much, it was just too soon.

But for now, together, they walked inside, seeing pregnant women, little children running around as if they were on sugar highs, babies crying and children screaming. It was chaos in here. But she tried to appear strong, keeping her hand in Jack’s.

The two do get a fair share of stares; some people whispering ‘is that Megamind?’ because Jack really did look like him; the only difference being he had pierced ears and didn’t wear all that leathery stuff.

“I’m beginning to think I should start wearing my beard differently.” he mumbled as they approached the receptionist.

“Hi there!” the perky woman behind the conter greeted, “How can I help you two today?”

“Uh. W-we need a p-proper pregnancy test. Please. F-for my girlfriend.” Jack explains.

“Hmmhm,” the woman says before looking to Katelynn with a smile. “When did the two of you last copulate?”

She simply nods, a small set of fresh tears falling, both in relief and worry. Kisses. Perhaps things were okay then? Or he was just trying to be reassuring. This was quite the bomb she had dropped on him so the shock must not have worn off.

Then he’d run from her for sure if the doctor confirmed her suspicions. God she didn’t want to lose him.

“L-Let’s go then..?”

He nodded, and after gathering their things, the two made their way to the nearest Pregnancy Clinics  and thankfully being such a huge city with so many people, they only have to walk a few blocks before they’re standing outside of one. Jack stands there, staring up at the pastel colored building with a weight sitting in his stomach.

“Never thought I’d walk into one of these places.” he admits weakly, before looking at Katelyn, and gives her hand a squeeze. “B-but here we go. Together, all right?”

Comfort

will-never-be-a-swan:

She feels weak, she feels faint. It was just too much emotion to take in one day. Especially while thinking Jack hated her for sure over this. God she wished she could go back in time to stop their second time. Something, anything to stop these negative feelings.

Weakly, she nods, completely drained. “O-Okay..”

“If. If you are then we’ll discuss things then.” Jack said firmly, trying to sound authorative and sure of himself and falling short if just a little thanks to his hesitant start.

Pregnancy was a big deal. A big, life changing deal. He would have to stop his art job and get a real one, one with a salary he could depend upon for a baby, and for Katelynn but he would do it. He’d sell his entire gallery if he has to but at this point it’s scary to think about. He rubs her back, kisses her temple, her cheeks, then her mouth softly.

“O-okay?”

Comfort

“I-I thought so too…I didn’t think it would say so soon..but..” She looked down, completely ashamed, a hand on her stomach as well. “The test is positive..It’s..in my bathroom if you don’t believe me…”

“…m-my mother said you can’t trust those things… maybe, maybe we should get a blood test, to, to be doubly sure before we… we start thinking too much?” he asks quietly.

Comfort

will-never-be-a-swan:

“But it is..” she argues back quietly. “I make you worry, I say things like wanting to become a vigilante, I-I…accuse you of something without hearing your side..the car accident a-and…”

She pulled back to look at him, biting on her bottom lip a moment. “J-Jack..I-I’m pregnant…”

And the tears fall down from her eyes unrelenting. If he hadn’t hated her for the other secret, then he might for this one. She was so scared of losing him over things she had kept from him and she was amazed he wasn’t turning his tail and running already.

But for this..perhaps he might and it scares her so badly.

He stared at her for a moment.

Jack tried to take a breath but found he couldn’t.

His eyes darted down to her flat stomach, then back to her face.

So what he thought this morning… wait.

“…h-how long does it… does it take to tell if a woman is pregnant…?” he asks weakly. “It can’t be… be a day, s-surely… it doesn’t happen like.. i-instantly…”
