He recognized the face this time and he watched as she approached him, and he smiled faintly before holding his hand out to her. She took it, and it felt just the same as always. Their skins were just different, that was all. Their hearts were still the same, right?

“Ah… an amusement park?” he’s never been around so many people at once before but… he has to get better. He has to. For her. For him. “Sure…!”

She smiled at his enthusiasm, glad she was able to help him smile again. It sent her heart pounding in happiness. She squeezed his hand gently, a little hesitant to kiss his cheek. She missed seeing him as she always did, his blue skin and bald head, but this was just so they could avoid drawing the attention of the villains.

“All right then, let’s go have a day of fun then!” she exclaimed, beginning to walk out of the room and tug him along gently, gathering her purse and keys.

It was strange to feel so… optimistic, and happy, after feeling so horrible about the loss of his art. But he did. Of course there was some hesitation, being around all those people, but he really did look just so normal. No blue head. No pointed ears. No bald head. Nothing. He was normal. He squeezed her hand in anticipation.

“I can’t wait.” he whispered as he shut the door behind them.

Jack jumped slightly when his blue skin suddenly became the same tone as his mothers. He stared for a moment before climbing off of the bed and made his way to the mirror on the door and stared at himself. He was taller. Fitter. And hair with glasses… Jack lifts his hands, touching his face, before looking back at Katelynn.

“Yes, e-et ez a good idea…” he stops, blinks, and looks down at himself. “…I ‘ave an accent?”

A smile tugged at her lips, watching him as he stared at himself. “Yeah..I’m not sure why French but Six lent you his voice with a French accent.”

Katelynn took out her own watch, the one Miss Megamind gave her and switched it on, transforming into the pale, black haired beauty. Six had given her a pregnant woman but for a date with her boyfriend, she felt that disguise wasn’t prudent.

“Disguised like this we can go out and have some fun today..distract ourselves. We could go to the amusement park or something..”

“Sure… how, how does it work?” he asks as he fastens the wrist watch into place and taps the face. It doesn’t react, obviously. He looks at her. “So Six made these for you?”

Sitting up slowly, she reaches for the watch and turns the dial as instructed before, Jack’s form changing into that of a darker skinned gentleman with sporty clothes and curly black hair. His voice also changes with a French accent.

“Yes, Six made these. I asked him to so we could hide from the villains and not be spotted. Good idea, right?”

A disguise watch. So he wouldn’t have to worry about being stared at? He’d look normal? Like a human being for the first time in his life? Jack sat up on the bed, looking at the black and blue watch being offered to him. Hesitantly he took it and looked it over.

“…I… I’d look… human?” he asked quietly, turning it around in his hands. “S-so no one would look at me thinking I… I’m… really? Human?” he asked, looking at her, eyes wide.

She nodded at him, glad he didn’t seem to object the idea. “Yes..I prefer you as you are but for this..you could be human if you want..want to try it out and see what you’d look like?”

“Sure… how, how does it work?” he asks as he fastens the wrist watch into place and taps the face. It doesn’t react, obviously. He looks at her. “So Six made these for you?”

“…I. I’d… I’d like that…” Jack whispered after a moment. He liked being with Katelynn, he loved being with her, seeing her smile, holding her hand, but… “W-what if one of the bad guys sees you? They, and… I stand out so much…” he mumbled. “I can’t blend like you can…”

“Would you..” she begins, feeling this might be the best opportunity to slip the watches into conversation, “would you object to using a disguise watch?” Her hand on his cheek gently trails down his jaw to his neck, caressing the skin.

“You know I love you no matter how you look..I wish we didn’t have to hide how we look..but if it worries you about being spotted..Six made us disguise watches aside from the ones I got from Miss Megamind. We can use them to go out and have fun?”

Taking them out of her pocket, she hands the one Six made for him and puts it in his hand gently. “I mean..if you want to. You don’t have to, okay?”

“You just want to help…” he said quietly. “There’s nothing… nothing wrong with that,” he added softly. “It was impressive but… but I can see why he would have spoken like that… Six is…” Jack paused, thinking. “…he’s a good man. I mean anyone can see he’s been through a lot…”

Oh if only he knew half of what Katelynn now knew.

“So w-what are we going to do?” he asked quietly.

She lay there, staring into his eyes, wondering if he would object as an idea popped into her mind, her hand still caressing his cheek. “Would you..object to a real date with me..? I-I know it’s so sudden after such a big loss and all..but..well I think you need to get your mind off things and we haven’t had a date..not a real one I think..We always said we would and we never got the chance..”

The fun times she had with Metro Man, with Grace, with Alice; she wanted that with Jack every time. Why had it been so easy to hang out with them and not get Jack out having fun?

He felt hers beating against his chest, her chest rising and falling, her everything. His world. Nothing more could he ask for than what was in his arms now and he knew that to be true.

“We have to start looking into getting a new place. But if, if you don’t want to, if you think we’re going too fast I understand, and… and we can… I don’t. I don’t know…”

“Shh,” she whispered softly, her thumbs rubbing near his eyes to clear the last of the tears away or any that continue to fall, her palms resting on cheeks. “I want to live with you..I do..We don’t have to think about that right now though..That can come later..or tomorrow..whenever you want.”

She leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his chin. “I wanted to talk to you anyway about something..I changed my mind about what I wanted to do, you know..with the whole spying on villains..I talked to Six..the things he said made me think..I don’t want to put you in danger. I don’t want to put myself in danger..not if it means worrying you. I don’t..I’m going to give it up. And I’m sorry I suggested it in the first place..It was a stupid, rash decision on my part..”

He kisses her forehead softly, shutting his eyes, before he pulls one hand away and wrapped it around her shoulders and the two fell backwards onto the bed. Jack pulls her in close, wrapping his arms around her, as the tears continue. She’s here. That’s what matters to him most now. Not his art, not his hands, nothing. He would let them be smashed if it meant she would be safe, and content.

“I love you.” he whispered quietly. “So much.”

She reached up a hand to gently wipe away his tears, being as loving in her gesture as possible, as soothing as she can be. “I love you too Jack..to the ends of the universe I will always love you..”

She snuggles closer to him, feeling his heart beat against her own.

He felt hers beating against his chest, her chest rising and falling, her everything. His world. Nothing more could he ask for than what was in his arms now and he knew that to be true.

He’s suddenly leading her from the room, and Katelynn finds herself sitting on the bed and Jack sits besides her. Looking up at him, though, she sees the tears. Of course he’s crying as well. Even if his art isn’t as priceless as she is, it is still his art. His soul had gone into so many pieces, everything he did, even for the people who hired him to paint their photographs larger.

The loss was horrible.

“I’m just. G-glad that. That nothing t-too big was lost. That. That’s all. M-my painting of you is… is in your apartment… it’s safe…”

She nodded slowly, her hands on his and rubbing them gently, trying to add any kind of comfort to him, scooting close to him so that their knees touch. “Y-Yeah..that painting is safe..I kept it safe for you..I did..I looked at it every day, appreciating it and loving it because you made it for me and it holds precious memories of when we had just met and were just friends.”

When times had been simpler and she hadn’t hurt him as much as she did. So much had happened so fast since they met that it made her head spin.

She picks up his hands and kisses them gently, rubbing them against her cheeks. His wonderful hands that could create such beauty on canvas. At least he was able bodied still to pick himself up and keep paining. But with such a loss would he want to? What if this scared him further than he already was? Made him shyer?

She didn’t want to think that he would allow himself to become that way. Jack was strong. She was sure of it.

“It… it’s okay…” he said quietly, pushing his hands through her hair slowly, carefully. “S-shh… Katelynn… I’m okay… you’re okay… we’re t-together… that’s what matters, n-now. It’s what always matters to me…” Jack whispered as he pulled her hand away from her mouth slowly.

“Paintings can be done any time… they can be replaced, remade even but… but not you… you’re irreplaceable to me.”

She turns pained eyes to him, seeing him comfort her instead of the other way around. The tears fall anyway, tears she thought she wouldn’t shed so soon after hearing Six’s story. Wasn’t there supposed to be balance in the universe? For a bit of sadness there had to be happiness, right?

“B-But..you work..still..and now you’re comforting me when I should be..” She pressed a hand to her forehead, taking a deep, shaky breath. “Being so weak instead of strong. It’s a shock..I wish I could turn back time a little..”

She felt so frustrated with herself at that moment, feeling weak, useless. She knew how much his art meant to him.
