Ice and Brains

I have to actively think to do everything, except my invulnerability… And my strength, I guess. [He shrugs. He’d been using his powers for so long they were more a reflex now, than a conscious thought.] So, are we taking the elevator down or the short-cut?

“I kind of..want to try the short cut if I can..I mean I’m pretty sure my body will just float..?” she wonders, walking over to the window and opening it up, the smell of paint wafting out into the cold air of winter. A light breeze blows past her, lifting her hair up and it’s as if the air curls around her body, lifting her up off the ground slowly and moving her toward the window.

Her mind had been on flying, thinking about it with the window open and the distance of space between the window and ground level so perhaps it’s why her body was being attracted to flying now. It hadn’t been about fear or curiosity as her ice powers were.

“O-Oh my..” she whispered as she began to float out the window. “J-Jack!”

She tried not to be afraid and in her mind, even if he couldn’t fly, she had immediately thought of her boyfriend first, having that sense that he would catch her if she fell.

Jack is there, rushing over to her, and reaches out to her and touches her legs, pretty sure she doesn’t want to float out the window just yet but it’s hard to tell. “Katelynn, Katelynn it’s okay, it’s okay… here, here!” he grabs a cord, the same one he used before, and ties it around her ankle. “I’ll secure it in here, and it’s one of those super long ones so you should be okay… okay?”

“No no I mean,” he got up from his bench and walked over to them. “Why don’t you just take my hand? Follow what Metro Man said,” Jack gestures to the man, “And try to not be afraid. Then you can see if it really does work, or not.”

She looks at Jack’s hand, feeling that same fear well up inside of her. Steam continues to come off of her body in wisps as she puts her hand up, as if hesitant. “B-But..what if I can’t control it..? And it hurts you..? I wouldn’t be able to stand it.”

Jack shrugs his shoulders to her. “Well… ah! If you can’t touch me,” he moves away and picks up a metal tube, and walks back to her, holding it out to her. “Hold this. Use your imagination, shut your eyes if you must, convince yourself it’s me. Try to control your fears, and see if you don’t freeze the pipe.”

Katelynn’s hand falls away in guilt, a blush staining her pale cheeks. “So-Sorry love..I didn’t..I was just..”

If you’ve got an opinion, I don’t mind hearing it. Another mind to figure this out isn’t a bad thing. [He wasn’t going to apologize for holding Katelynn’s hand. He was only trying to help and they all knew it.]

“No no I mean,” he got up from his bench and walked over to them. “Why don’t you just take my hand? Follow what Metro Man said,” Jack gestures to the man, “And try to not be afraid. Then you can see if it really does work, or not.”

“Um..sort of..” she says, fluffing her blue dress down and trying to put her hair back to normal. It was a bit messed up from how she had been flying upside down.

“So-Sorry to bug you like this..”

No problem. I’m always willing to help a friend. [He glances past her at Jack and waves.] So, what exactly is the problem?

Jack has some welding goggles on and he’s working on… what looks like a glove. He lifts his head and waves to Metro Man, turning off his welder. “She has powers like Hot Flash, only ice, and she can’t control them yet.”

Jack leans against the wall. “Hey Metro Man? It’s Jack, Katelynn’s boyfriend. Look, Katelynn needs some helpful advice about flying techniques from you.” he says straight away, “Long story short, a magic anon got her and she can fly and use ice powers similar to Hot Flash only in reverse and she keeps suddenly floating off the floor. Can you come around to see her?”

[He blinks in surprise, her boyfriend? Wasn’t he supposed to be stuttering and speaking softly?] Uh, sure. Where are you?

“Oh, at my apartment. It’s the same building she is only on a floor up, third door down.” Jack answers. “So see you soon?”

Jack quickly pecks her forehead; like kissing a cool plate, before pulling back and dialing the number. Huh. This will be the first time he had spoken to the man since their small talk after the ‘incident’. Still. Past is past. He puts the phone to his ear, waiting.

[He answers, expecting Katelynn because of the number on his caller ID.] Hey. What’s up?

“You want me to call them for you?” he asks as he pushes the trolley inside, the two dogs sniffing at the wheels, too preoccupied by something new to care about the two of them. “I mean, if you touch it you could freeze it here, here…” Jack follows her, and picks up her phone before she can touch it. “I’ll call Metro Man, okay?”

“A-Ah you’re right..sorry…I forgot..” She ends up feeling pretty useless, unable to touch even her cell phone or risk damaging it? She tugs on her hair like always, watching Jack call Metro Man.

And, for once, Jack could care less. He pushes the cart along, ignoring the people around them, as they make it to their apartment. Once outside he reels Katelynn in like a fish on a hook, until she’s hovering closer to the floor. “Maybe you should call Metro Man, or Six, and ask them for tips on how to fly and turn it off?” he asks, before beginning to lead her inside along with the trolley.

She reaches a leg out to touch the ground, feeling herself grow heavier as she makes contact. Hmm maybe it worked with contact? “I could..that’s a good idea..” she says, about to reach in and kiss his cheek but stops herself at the last minute and turns her head.

She walks off to find her cell phone as she hadn’t taken it with her.

“Whoa hello!” Jack yelps, before grabbing hold of a long extension cord he bought. He unpacks it, swings one end like a rope. “Katelynn, catch! Tie it around your ankle or something!” he calls before throwing it.

She makes a grab for it, rotating in the air as she does and ties it around her ankle, now being dragged by Jack. “S-Sorry..I can’t control these powers!” She tucks her legs under herself, trying to hide her panties and blushing deeply. It looks weird, a blue man pushing a cart fool of scrap metal as he tugs what looks like a thin balloon who is actually a woman.

People stop to stare at them, a little kid’s candy falling on the ground.
