Jack’s Birthday

*he was a nice guy, wasn’t he? jack was quiet, he hadn’t risen his voice, hadn’t sworn, or come off as boisterous or even boastful of his art. just how had his parents raised him to be like this, and yet still remain so quiet, so shy and had such a low self esteem? it didn’t seem fair, but he…seemed happy. he felt happy, right now, with her sitting besides him.

she made his heart do funny things. his stomach became knots. his voice fell from his lips sometimes and he wanted so much to say nicer things, but every compliment he gives her makes her blush and go quiet. maybe he should try some of that romantic stuff from movies. he’d seen enough of them? but was that too forward? he hadn’t known her a week. but that’s how some people work…*

oh there’s an empty place in my bones

that calls out for something unknown

the fame and praise come year after year

does nothing for these empty tears…

*he didn’t mean to, really, but he sung along with his name sake on the screen as the skeleton slumped into the trees, away from the grave and pumpkin patch. he sighed afterwards, watching as sally gathered the things from the two graves*

…thank you for coming to see me on my birthday…

Not quite asleep, she snuggles against him a bit more, head tucked in his neck. “…you’re welcome..” she sighs out, this time falling asleep against him, not even realizing she was.

*he took her mug from her, less she hurt herself, and set it on the floor. carefully he pulled the blanket closer around her before easing back into the beanbag. she was resting her head on his chest now, and he was worried how his heart rate wasn’t waking her up. but he let her sleep. he let her, pretending for a moment that she was… was his girlfriend, that this was normal, and the rapid heart beating stopped for a while as he watched his movie*

*he smiles and settles down against her on the bean bag, watching the movie play out in front of them. jack smiled softly* …thank you. they’d really appreciate you hearing that…

“It’s only the truth..” Her voice becomes softer, her eyes closing. Her mind was fuzzing up and it should have shocked her to realize how safe she felt where she was, as if nothing could hurt her. Isn’t it too soon to feel something like this…?

But her head lulled to the side completely against his shoulder, feeling content.

*he smiled and… just gently, rested his chin against her head a moment and shut his eyes, hands holding his mug* w-well they said they’d try… like i said… free spirited in their advancing years but… m-maybe they’ll come. i’d still like to see them and, and maybe you might meet them…!

“I’d really like that,” she whispered, taking another sip of her tea and feeling the warmth spread throughout her body. “Because they sound so wonderful and they raised you to be a wonderful person.” She only slightly nuzzled her head a little against him before settling back down.

hippies. *he says this quite honestly, and openly; barely blinking at the admission* they… they’re very free spirited and open minded. s’why they… they adopted me, since i was so different and they wanted to take care of me. i call them by their names too but… i see how that can be weird for some… now i’m out the house they travel a lot, but they said they’d try to see me around the holidays even if they think christmas is a little over commercialized… th-they just want to use it for the family stuff.

She smiled, warmed by his presence, the blanket and tea, her eyes half lidded. “They sound wonderful. So then you’re not really going to be alone during the holidays like you said, not if they manage to come. I hope they do.”

i-i think everyone does it at some point… it’s… it’s not that bad.

“Unless your mom decides to tell you that you can’t cook and why bother trying,” she replies softly, her head snuggling up against his shoulder a bit. “What are you parent’s like, Jack?”

i’ve done that but with an egg. *he laughed weakly, shaking his head as he started the movie up again* the place stunk of egg for a week….

Katelynn made a face, turning to look at him. “That must have smelled horrible. I can’t really stand eggs. Though is it weird if I’m glad I’m not the only one that has burned something so horribly?”

She was hardly paying attention to the movie at this point, snuggling against his side a bit for warmth.

you burned… really? *he takes the cup from her and Roxy sniffs at it, eager to see if its something for her. jack hold sit out of her reach and gently nudges her to the floor* n-no, down…

Smiling, Katelynn offers her a treat instead. “Yeah, I think I forgot about it and it boiled for so long, all the water evaporated. I didn’t remember about it until my smoke alarm went off…”

And she tried to duck her face by taking a drink, trying to be careful not to burn her tongue.

*he had paused the movie, and tilted his head to peer up at her* o-oh. um. surprise me. i don’t take sugar or milk with anything s-so… yeah. *he smiles*

Returning the smile, she ducks back into the kitchen and her eyes widen upon seeing the water beginning to boil and lose some of it’s contents. “O-Oops,” she muttered, taking it off the stove, trying to be careful not to burn herself.

She definitely didn’t want him to think she was some sort of klutz since she had already hurt herself today.

Pouring the water into the mugs, she grabbed some tea bags and put them into water, pouring sugar in hers.

Definitely different from Mr. Megamind who loves sweets. Jack is really surprising me all the time. I like it. She mused, as she cleaned up her mess, washing the pot and tossing out the garbage.

Walking back into the living room, she handed him a random cup, having forgotten which one had sugar. “H-Here you go.” And tried to sit back down, moving her hair to the side and trying not to spill on herself. “I can’t believe I actually managed to do it. Last time I tried to make tea, I burned the pot and had to toss it out.”
