Jack’s Birthday

w-well good… that was pretty rude doing that. i mean what, what if and i mean to say this in the m-most um. un-real way possible but what if we were on a d-date and s-she just did that? i-i wouldn’t have liked that at all… n-neither would you. i mean i-if you were my girlfriend. which you’re n-not but you know what i mean.

*oh lord he too is he glad his apartment isn’t too far away too. it’s getting colder*

“Un-real way possible.” Katelynn had winced a little, hoping he didn’t notice, as he told her that. What did I expect? I’m not dating material after all. Not even Harrison wanted me. She tried to hide it with a smile, however but there was a slight less skip in her step. “Y-Yeah. It would have been totally rude.”

She was getting cold herself, having barely any meat on her bones though Jack was skinnier than she was. Getting closer to him hoping to give him some warmth, she asked, “We could race and see who makes it first? It’ll warm us up a little, if you want to?”

*he noticed her stance change; as an artist he knew how to watch people. and watching katelynn’s reactions to things he said was jus ta reminder of how out of touch he was with people. he’d said the wrong thing. the worst thing. he stumbles slightly, on his words, and the pavement* n-not that i’m sa-saying you’re not dating material or, or anything be-because i think you are..! *please don’t turn into a grape, please don’t turn into a grape* y-you’re easy to get along with, y-you’re funny, s-smart, n-not to mention p-pr-pretty i m-mean any guy who dates you i-is going to be lucky. really l-lucky. *and it won’t be me. god i can barely keep my voice steady telling you THIS*

*having blurted this he does begin to walk closer to her, and blinks at her offer* r-running? in the snow? sounds dangerous… wh, what if one of us slipped?

i don’t see why not. *he smiles and unwraps the leash from his leg and after the two pay for their cake and hot chocolate, and jack pointedly avoids looking at marie, the two friends… and pug… leave the cafe*

As they walk along back to the apartment, Katelynn skipping a bit, she giggles a bit. “I’m guessing you didn’t see the look on that girl’s face when we left. She looked a bit shocked you didn’t look back at her.”

Katelynn had been surprised to find she found the topic funny, usually not one to laugh at people, but the waitress had bugged her a bit being so bold and leaving her number with Jack. They weren’t together on a date but if it were some other couple who had been, that would have been downright rude.

As it was she was glad the apartment wasn’t too far away.

*he smiled faintly, though now he felt bad. she was nervous and shy again. gently, he nudged her*

if you don’t want to its okay…

Looking back up at him shyly, her face melted into a huge smile. “I do want to! Really. Then Roxy can snuggle with me in my lap.”

She looked down at the pug, smiling, her eyes full of promise for more treats. “I hope you don’t mind Roxy.”

*the pug was on her back, staring up at the two. at having been spotted she squirms around onto her four paws and snuffles up at them, knowing they had food.*

she’d like that. roxy likes snuggles.

…thank you again for all of this… it. it means so much to me… i haven’t done… had this in a long time… *he smiles at her softly*

She is caught off guard by his thanks as she leans back a little to smile at him. “No worries. I’m having a really good time hanging out with you. I was thinking we could go back to your apartment and maybe watch a romantic comedy after, if you want? Since I haven’t seen many of them I’d like to see what the fuss is about.”

And she giggles to show him she’s slightly joking.

*he smirks at her and then grins toothily, and taps the table top.* well its my birthday so we have to do what i want. and, and i want to go home and watch a movie with you. my choice of course. you have to watch it with me. okay?

well eating snow is part of a regular daily diet, don’t you know? *he asked in a snooty voice, before he chuckled and lifted his hot chocolate and took a long sip. god, it was good. now if he could only ignore everyone around him outside of katelynn and roxy, he’d be fine… one day, maybe… one day.*

“Oh is it really?” she teased, leaning in closer to him with a smirk. “I guess I’ve been eating the wrong foods then.” After the initial bite she hardly touched the cake or the drink, her hands in her lap.

…thank you again for all of this… it. it means so much to me… i haven’t done… had this in a long time… *he smiles at her softly*

there’s more to a wife then cooking… wives are about love, support, understanding and… y-yeah…. *he trails off and is thankful of the topic change. he looks out at the woman*

…well it’s cold. she doesn’t like it, b-because it goes through her bones. but she’s waiting for her no good grandson who said he’d go shopping with her for christmas gifts. he’s a no good bad boy but makes time for her since she’s his grandmother. his friends tease him on it but he makes em eat snow.

She begins to giggle and covers her mouth with her hand to stop the onslaught. “Yes, even bad boys love their grandma’s. He’ll probably end up buying her something frilly and gets embarrassed entering the store because it’s so girly but his friends tease him about that too and he makes them eat snow.”

*he held her for a moment, just… enjoying the closeness, and the moment. she felt wonderful, here in his arms, her breath on his neck and he wanted to suddenly ask her out. to ask to go properly out, on a date, with her; but no. he barely known her a few days. who does that? not him… not him. he lets go of her, face purple*

w-well you did, thank you… thank you… *he works at getting it onto his wrist now, before finally picking up a fork to try a slice of cake. he takes a bite, and sits there a while* …this is amazing.

The moment broken, she blinks, her face melting into a smile as she goes back to eating. “Y-Yeah. It isn’t too sweet like those supermarket cakes. I wish I knew how to bake like this. I’m going to be a horrible wife someday,” she commented giggling. “Burning water and making brick cakes.”

Looking outside the window, she spotted an old woman waiting impatiently for someone, her mind already running with a story. “So, birthday boy, what do you think is that lady’s story? The impatient one across the street.” She hoped it wasn’t too much of a change in topic.

*he was just about to stab the cake with his fork when she suddenly produced the watch. jack froze, eyes on the watch, before looking at her. she barely knew him, but she had gone to the extreme of… he felt his heart tighten and squirm before melting into butterflies and he smiled a big, great, honest smile*

o-oh, katelynn…!! *he reached for it from her, looking it over* it, it’s so classy looking and.. and… thank you! *before he knows it his arms are around her, pulling her in and hugging her* thank you!

She blushed, not used to hugs and tried to wrap her own arms tentatively around him but they were stuck between them. “Y-You’re welcome. I’m really glad you l-like it..I wanted to properly surprise you.”

Because she couldn’t really move, she tucked her head on his shoulder a bit to hide her blushing face from the probably jealous waitress.

*he had stared, unblinking, at the napkin. her name was marie. her number. he’d never… oh wow. really? he’d never gotten a name this way before. or a number. jack turns to look over his shoulder just as marie happens to catch him looking and winks again. turning back, just as katelynn lit the candles on the cake slices*

…a wish…

*i wish i wasn’t afraid of people* hm. *he blows on the candles*

Katelynn claps a little before proceeding to take the candles out of the piece of cake, licking the end a little. “Oh wow this is really good, you should try it,” she offers, sliding the cake toward him, the fork on the side.

She tries to doodle on her napkin as she takes a piece of cake for herself with her own fork, popping it into her mouth and sighing at how yummy it tasted. “Now, I know I got you the painting already as a present but..”

She reached into her jacket and took out a lovely silver watch with a blue face, handing it over to him. “I though I’d get you something else. It sort of chimes every hour with a lovely little melody.”

*he had turned the color of grape when she told him those things. him, a good boyfriend? it seemed… strange, being told that. especially by the woman who he felt so much for but it was silly wasn’t it? too fast. too soon. too, too fast. and she had so many friends. what did he have to offer? he had no powers. he wasn’t a genius. he was just a painter. that was it. she deserved a millionaire*

…y-yeah… it’ll be… i hope so…

She reached over to pat his hand gently just as the waitress came over with their drinks, Katelynn’s hot chocolate looking a bit rushed while Jack’s had a little candy cane sticking through it and topped with chocolate sprinkles. Katelynn had been so wrapped up in their conversation she had forgotten about the cake.

“Here you are, enjoy!” the waitress said, winking at Jack before scurrying away.

Katelynn noticed a bit of ink on the napkin under Jack’s drink and pulled it out carefully, trying not to spill his hot chocolate. “Oh wow,” she whispered, looking it over discreetly. “She left her phone number on it with a heart.”

She slid it back and grabbed the candles, putting them on the pieces of cake. “That’s pretty daring.” She began to light the candles with the matches she had in her pocket.

Blushing a bit, Katelynn began to sing softly, “Ha-Happy Birthday to you…Happy B-Birthday to you…” Trailing off and smiling. “Make a wish.”
