He said nothing.

She sighed, feeling defeated. Now he wasn’t even talking and her curiosity wouldn’t leave her alone. And she had promised not to go after Sally too. She lay on the bed with him, feeling so many conflicated emotions.

Maybe after so many years of verbal abuse that she felt she had to know. Improving herself was how she had gotten that far.

He was getting tired again. The fight with Sally had done more to him than he thought it would. Eyelids heavy, heart heavy, soul heavy, Jack whispers a ‘sorry’ before he falls asleep.

Metro City…

“…no, Katelynn. I won’t.”

And that was all he said on the matter.

She bit her lip, wondering if begging him would work. She didn’t know why she wanted to know so badly. Maybe if she knew she could improve herself? She shared this sentiment with Jack, trying to see if it would work, using a bit of pleading in her voice.

He said nothing.

“I don’t like thinking about that.” Jack said. “I don’t like… thinking of what if’s. If it had ever been a choice I obviously didn’t take it and… Katelynn? You aren’t a loose woman. You aren’t ‘easy’…” he wished he could turn his head to look at her but he still couldn’t. He lamented that fact so much. His hands found her though, holding her, touching her.

“H-how can you be? Sex is… making love is what happens when you love someone as much as you can… when you feel so comfortable to be one person, even if it’s just for… for a brief moment. But that moment, oh Katelynn… I love you, so much, I love everything about you. Even if we never made love again I would still love you, and adore you… you must know this…”

“I-I do..” she whispered, because she really did. Oh how she knew because he always reminded her. “I do know…I just can’t help but be affected by such things…”

Her fingers stroked his as she tried to resist the curiosity. It was just too strong. “I guess…you won’t tell me what she said about me..? Just cause I’m c-curious..”

“…no, Katelynn. I won’t.”

And that was all he said on the matter.

“Katelynn… sometimes… friendships have to end.” Jack said quietly, sadly, but honestly. “Not everyone can get… along forever. Please, promise me… don’t go after her. Please…” he whispered, lifting his hand, found her head, and ran it down her head to her shoulder gently, slowly.

A small part of her heart broke a bit when he didn’t deny her words. He must have agreed with her then. She never thought she’d be such a woman. But she nodded against him, feeling regret over the situation at hand.

“I p-promise…” she replies shakily.

Not everyone can get along forever.Oh but how her slight insecurities cried at that. She knew they couldn’t, she knew friendships were fleeting. It was saddening to think about as the friends she had, how she cared for them and never wished to lose them. But people moved on, some stopped caring. It was the way of life.

How much Katelynn hated goodbyes.

“If…You said she should have told you sooner..If she did…what would have happened?” she wondered, thinking of the different path they might have been on.

“I don’t like thinking about that.” Jack said. “I don’t like… thinking of what if’s. If it had ever been a choice I obviously didn’t take it and… Katelynn? You aren’t a loose woman. Jack sighs, shakily, and shuts his eyes.

“I never liked how she hung off me.” he whispers. “I always felt. Wrong. Sometimes I thought it was because I was gay. W-what man didn’t like a woman touching him, hanging off him…? B-but I’m not. I love you so much, Katelynn… she just. Became so mad. So fast. I didn’t know she could be like that…”

“It’s because she cared about you,” she said, voice slightly muffled against his shoulder. “She must have been so frustrated. She told me I was some loose city woman who got you into bed and it felt like…maybe she was right..I did ask for psyical love so fast. Maybe she was right about whatever she told you. But I…I love you too and I try to make you smile. It’s all I want to do..”

She sighed softly. Was there any way to fix this? “M-Maybe I can try to fix this..somehow..”

He was laying there, staring ahead, his expression fairly unreadable. Slowly, he blinks.

“She told me she didn’t want me going back.” he said quietly. “That she hears about the violence. That she’s scared for me. That she wants me to move back home, and never go back.” Jack pressed his hands against his stomach, gripping at the blankets. “She told me she loved me. That she’s loved me for years and that I just never saw it. I. I told her she should have just told me. That she shouldn’t have kept it quiet this long but. I told her I love you.” his eyes looked up to Katelynn, they were wet, but not crying. “That my heart belongs to you, and you to me. She said. Things. Against you and I told her to leave. If that’s how she really is to. To not talk to me again because I don’t want to hear those words against you. Ever. Because I love you. She called me an idiot, that. That the city’s changed me for the worst and, and that you’re bad for me. Then she said she hated me.” he tilts his eyes as best he can, trying to see the door.

“Then she left.”

So much had gone wrong so quickly? Goodness, she sat down on his bed gently, trying to lay next to him and cuddle him close, pressing her face against his shoulder. Putting her arm around his chest gently, she whispered, “I-I’m sorry love, maybe I shouldn’t have left you two alone. I thought…she told me she had a crush on you and I thought it’d be best if she told you but not like this…not at the cost of your friendship with her..I’m so sorry..”

Was she ever going to do right for this man? Pain seemed to be all she brought to him. But this wasn’t about her. A friendship seemed to have ended and it pained her that it did.

Jack sighs, shakily, and shuts his eyes.

“I never liked how she hung off me.” he whispers. “I always felt. Wrong. Sometimes I thought it was because I was gay. W-what man didn’t like a woman touching him, hanging off him…? B-but I’m not. Of course she didn’t eaves drop.

Of course she went outside for some fresh air, leaving Jack and Sally to talk.

Though, not five minutes Later, not even that, Sally left the clinic. She didn’t even look at Katelynn, instead she hurried down the street and was soon gone from sight.

Well that had been rather fast. Katelynn blinked after Sally, wondering if something had gone wrong. She turned and ran back to Jack’s room, trying to be as quick as possible.

“Was…Is everything all right?” she whispered, coming to Jack’s bedside.

He was laying there, staring ahead, his expression fairly unreadable. Slowly, he blinks.

“She told me she didn’t want me going back.” he said quietly. “That she hears about the violence. That she’s scared for me. “That’s okay…” he whispers, letting his eyes shut as she kissed his forehead. “I was… going to wake up… anyway..”

“Hi, Jack. Hi…” Sally greeted gently. “I just wanted to come see how you were.”

He turned his eyes to look at her, looking surprised by her presence. “O-oh! Sally, h-hello…!”

“Always getting into trouble.” she smiled softly. “But you’re being looked after well I can tell.”

Katelynn blushed, taking his hand gently between both of hers, watching Jack’s face. “Always. I’ll always look after him the best I can,” she whispered, ducking her head a little to avoid both of their eyes.

God but she still felt so awkward with Sally here. The woman had confessed something private and personal to her and she wondered what Jack would think of it. Perhaps…it would be best if he knew. Maybe then she could get over him?

Giving his hand a kiss, she let him go gently and walked to the door. “I’ll…let you two talk I guess and go get some water…I’ll be right back..” And out the door she went, her heart hammering in her chest.

Of course she didn’t eaves drop.

Of course she went outside for some fresh air, leaving Jack and Sally to talk.

Sally let go of him and took a step back as Jack’s eyes slowly opened. The man was foggy, half awake, half asleep, but he does hear Katelynn’s voice and turns his eyes to where she is, unfocused as he is.

“Hey… Katelynn…”

“Love…” she whispers, kissing his forehead gently. “I’m sorry…We must have been so loud…” She shouldn’t have raised her voice like she did but she had been trying to defend Jack to Sally, trying to explain how different and possibly better his life was in Metro City.

She decided not to mention the villains to Sally. Why worry the girl more?

“That’s okay…” he whispers, letting his eyes shut as she kissed his forehead. “I was… going to wake up… anyway..”

“Hi, Jack. Hi…” Sally greeted gently. “I just wanted to come see how you were.”

Sally turned her head away.

“I know that. It’s obvious isn’t it?” she looks back at Jack, watching his face. “The way I saw him looking at you in the market. I’ve never seen him look at anyone like that before. I used to want him to see me like that but all he saw me as was ‘one of the boys’. Even when I grew up, all he saw was the dirty faced little girl from down the street.

I knew if he went to the city he’d find one of you city girls. The fast moving ones. Quick to fall into bed, promising everything.” Sally looks at Katelynn, frowning. “If you turn out to be one of those women…” she started but stopped, since Jack suddenly began to stir.

“Nngh.” he groaned, hands moving. “What…”

Falling into bed quickly with him. Her heart leapt at her throat then, looking guilty suddenly. But when Jack stirred, all thoughts were on him.

“Love!” she cried, moving closer to him and peering down at him. “I’m sorry, did we wake you?”

Sally let go of him and took a step back as Jack’s eyes slowly opened. The man was foggy, half awake, half asleep, but he does hear Katelynn’s voice and turns his eyes to where she is, unfocused as he is.

“Hey… Katelynn…”
