He smiled sadly at her tears, but didn’t want to let her go to wipe at them. Not yet, he wasn’t ready to let her go yet. It felt like he’d been waiting all this time for her to come along with her long hair, her beautiful eyes and loving ways in how she treated those around her.
Just how she could begin to think such negative things tore at his heart. If he ever met her parents… ooh… words would be said. Strong ones. If Katelynn had been surprised at how he had treated Psycho Delic, she’d be truly shocked if he ever met her parents.
“You’re welcome.” he replied softly, uncaring if she didn’t say the words back to him. He’d only said them twice, once now, and once while she had been asleep. It was very early to say those words but there was no other way for him to convey how he felt for her.
She wasn’t sure how long she stayed in his arms, trying to get her sobbing under control. It felt so nice, being hugged by someone she cared so much about. To feel so protected, loved, and accepted.
When she ran it through her mind, she wanted him to know as well. The urge was strong within her. “You..you’re so wonderful..to me..you have to know…How much I care about you..back..”
Was she strong enough to say the words? Were they honest and true? She knew she was falling for him but was she ready to trust him with her heart?
Pulling back, she looked into the eyes she loved.
Loved.
“I..love you..too..”
She shook then a bit, a bit of fear entering. “But..I’m scared at the..same time..”
“…I’m a little scared too.” he whispered as he carefully touched her face, caressing one of her cheeks with his thumb softly, not wanting to hurt her.
“I. I’ve never felt… this way for any one. At all. I was so.. so quick to accept no one would like me. Much less love… love me. But you mean so m-much to me, Katelynn, and I want you to know,” his free hand touched her hand, closing around it slowly, carefully. “that we can go slow. As s-slow as you want in this because this is s-so different to the romance movies I watch. Because this is us. N-not someone on a screen. I don’t want to mess this up…”

He frowned.
That wasn’t what parents were meant to do, but he knew the world was a dark place. He knew there were cruel people, and to think Katelynn had people like that for parents… he hesitantly wrapped his arms around her, trying so very hard to be gentle, not wanting to hurt her.
“Forget them. F-forget what they’ve said. I know it isn’t easy b-but please. You’re better then what they’ve said, y-you’re a beautiful person, inside and out and I love you so much, I can’t stand t-to see you like this. Not in hospital like this but doubting yourself. I’m here, n-now. I’m going to stay here, too, because I need you as much as you need me. All right?”
She gasped, her breath once again taken away. He had said the words, the magical words she never thought she’d hear from anyone. Not even her own father told her, despite the okay relationship they had.
Tears collected at her eyes, hating to cry as she always did, but unable to help it. His words were just too beautiful, his feelings for her… She couldn’t contain the emotion.
Despite thinking karma had hurt her over how she had hurt others, it had still sent her a wonderful man.
And she was falling for him, hard.
She nuzzled against his head, sobbing softly into her mask, her arms reaching up to hug him back. “O…Okay…Thank..you..Thank you…”
Perhaps she really could heal thanks to him.

Jack reached both his hands up and gently touched her face, and looked into her eyes.
“People can not blame you for this.” he said firmly. “This was nothing but a horrible accident. You didn’t make the car hit you. You didn’t make the driver careless. You did nothing wrong, Katelynn.” Jack said in a voice he never thought he’d use in his life. Authoritativeness. Sure of himself. Not for himself, but for her. “I don’t… I don’t know what people have told you in the past, Katelynn but now, this is not you fault. And you’re not a burden at all. You’re my best friend, you’re my girlfriend, you’re the reason why I leave my apartment at least once a day now. Y-you’ve inspired such change in me, you can see it, so how can you still call yourself these horrible things?”
His words touched her, oh how they did. Her heart sped up, her mother’s words banished from her mind to be replaced by this wonderful man’s own words.
Was it possible for a heart to swell with more feeling for someone? She felt like it would burst or overflow, she wasn’t sure which. Probably depended on how strong her heart was.
“Because..my parent’s made me think that way…”
He frowned.

Jack frowned at hearing her say that, before shaking his head.
“You’re not. Please, don’t say that. You m-may think that now, you may have even felt it before but please. You’re many th-things to me, but you’re not a burden, Katelynn…”
You’re nothing but a burden!
Her mother had shouted that at some point when all Katelynn could do was stay locked in her room, hiding from the world, doing nothing for herself. Katelynn had run away from home after that, not wishing to hear such words. Her father had found her not too long after, taking her home only for her mother to continue to argue, saying that running away was stupid, taking precious time out of their lives to have to find her.
Katelynn hated her.
“But…I’m here making..you worry about….the way..you looked before…you..said so yourself..you were so..worried..But I..I didn’t mean to…get hit…to have this..happen..I didn’t…! I..never meant for..anything bad..to happen..but people..blamed me…”

He gave her a small, slightly uncertain but still appreciative smile.
“You did. S… seeing how you wrote and photographed things and… and just… something about you got my attention… I wanted to… to just know you. To s-see your face and.. hear your voice and that n-never happened before…” Jack went on to explain further, looking down at his hand on hers. “…a-and I’m so glad that I, I did.”
The shock having worn off, she remembered what he said about being teased, feeling her heart go out to him. It was because of her that he was changing after having so much happen to him? She couldn’t believe it. She wasn’t even sure how to respond. He seemed to do that a lot with her, taking the words away.
She would have never thought she’d ever be someone’s strength.
She wanted to argue, to tell him she was just a regular, ordinary girl, but she didn’t. “But I’m…just a burden…”
Jack frowned at hearing her say that, before shaking his head.
“You’re not. Please, don’t say that. You m-may think that now, you may have even felt it before but please. You’re many th-things to me, but you’re not a burden, Katelynn…”

He smiled back faintly, before reaching for the hand she was writing with and caressed the back of it with his fingers slowly. “…I feel it slowly happening… which is. Something amazing I mean.” Jack paused before looking up out of the window at the slowly falling snow. “…when I was growing up I was bullied. Badly. I… used to go home with bruises and injuries. E-every day the other kids would.. would find ways to get to me either with… words or their hands. I don’t know why… m-my father said it was because they were afraid of me. M-my mother said it was because I was different, u-unique. Jealousy.” he forces a shaky laugh, shaking his head as he did. “I don’t s-see how they could b-be jealous of-of somebody just wa-wanting to be accepted…
…b-but after one boy p-purposely made a bee hive f-fall on me and I was i-in hospital for a week my p-parents pu-pulled me out of school entirely. So-some say taking me away f-from other people was a-a bad move be-because if only m-made my fear of them wo… worse. But m-my parents were t-trying to protect me be-because they love me. I was… was so ready to just ta-talk to people via the in-Internet when it b-became popular since it-it was easier. I couldn’t… couldn’t get hurt b-but at the same time I couldn’t… couldn’t connect.”
Jack looked at her now, and pressed hish and over hers entirely now, rubbing her skin with his thumb.
“T-then you happened.”
His touch sent shivers down her and she dared not move his hand to write. She didn’t have a lot to say to that anyone, being stunned into silence. “M..Me..?” she asked through the mask, sounding as shocked as she looked. “I could…couldn’t have..”
He gave her a small, slightly uncertain but still appreciative smile.

“…my grandmother used to say as long as one person believes in you one hundred percent, it counts more than that hundred percent.” Jack said, and once he was certain the mask was on properly he sat back down. Only this time on the edge of the bed, rather than the chair since his guitar was sitting there quite comfortably. “You would have liked her. She… she was very quiet but when she would talk people’d listen to her.”
She looked back at him, her heart breaking at the past sense term. ‘I really wish I could have met her as well. She sounds like a wonderful person. You know, I believe in you more than 100%. You’re changing slightly, I can tell. Little by little you’re becoming so much braver and sweeter.’
She smiled.

As beautiful as the moment as, no matter how warm her lips felt, how much affection that the two of them were pouring into this simple gesture that people did every day, even with the romantic element of snow softly falling outside the hospital window… it had to end. All good things had to end eventually.
The two broke apart, Jack’s cheeks flushing purple as always, and he tried to capture his breath as he reached down and picked up the mask Katelynn had taken off.
“You’re beautiful.” he said simply as he helped her to replace it. “Don’t tell… don’ tell me otherwise. Ever. O-okay…?”
As he worked, she stared at him with half lidded eyes, eyes dark and a silly smile on her face. It had definitely been worth it.
But at his words, she looked off to the window, watching the snow. ‘I guess maybe I can start to believe it if you really think so.’ And blushed, not really pushing for compliments so much as stating a truth. ‘Though it still amazes me you think so.’

He knew they shouldn’t do this. That she needed the mask to help her breathe. But his heart, how it ached. How it hurt over seeing her doing this, for him. Because she wanted to kiss him, to feel him like this. Despite the guilt going on within his heart, and his mind, he lets his eyes shut for a moment and he kisses her back gently; softly, not wanting to hurt her.
His hand finds one of hers easily, and he holds it gently.
He wished they were anywhere but here.
She breaths through her nose, her lungs filling with air so she can enjoy the kiss. It was so loving and she hardly wanted it to end, trying her best to keep her breathing under control.
It wasn’t too difficult and the pain medication was helping to keep her chest pain at bay. It was all worth it for just this moment, expressing so much in a simple kiss.
She cared about him so much that it overshadowed any physical pain anyway.
