He chewed at his bottom lip, and looked away. “It is a s-scary thought…” it made any moment they had together their possibly last one. It wasn’t a nice thought. Jack reached over and placed his hand on her knee. “I, t-try not to think about it…?”

Katelynn did for the most part, every time she was at work and reminded about the portals. But she smiled at him and let out a deep breath. “I guess that’s all we can do..Bernard tried to comfort me about it and told me he didn’t think the portals would ever close but..”

She shrugged a shoulder, grabbing for her food again and tossing some of the bread for the birds to eat, watching the water move and rippling the image of the moon.

Jack nodded. He did his best to not ponder such things like that. So far his entire life had happened fairly ordinarily, nothing out of the ordinary either. He had found Katelynn and things just felt so much better for him. He felt braver. Stronger. Sure of himself. She did so much for him, did she know how much?

He moved closer to her, and he too tossed some bread to the birds.

They may be in different skin, but truly, nothing had changed at all. Certainly not his love for her. Nothing could change that.

“Maybe?” Jack asked. “I don’t. I don’t know. I mean, we’ve been to where I was raised. We didn’t go t-through a portal or… anything. I don’t..” he look down at his bowl of chowder. “I don’t think I am a Megamind…”

“No, I didn’t mean Megamind..” she whispered, putting her bowl of chowder down to lean in closer to him. “You’re not..I mean..I didn’t say they were either, I know they’re their own person just as you are. I just..kept worrying that if you came from a portal…that someday you’d disappear if the portals were to ever close..working at the museum..I’m learning so much about them..it’s a scary thought..”

“I think people are m-more used to blue people now a days…” Jack said with a shrug as he dug out some more chowder and took a slow bite, chewing just as slowly. “There’s certainly more of us running around…”

“All of them from different dimensions but everyone single one of them are so kind as well,” she said, taking another bite with a bit of potato.

“And they know they stumbled here in Metro City too..I used to wonder if you were like them..from another dimension..but I doubt that..because you would have known, right?”

“Maybe?” Jack asked. “I don’t. I don’t know. I mean, we’ve been to where I was raised. We didn’t go t-through a portal or… anything. I don’t..” he look down at his bowl of chowder. “I don’t think I am a Megamind…”

“Sounds good.” Jack smiled slightly, and thankfully it isn’t too long until the two are sitting on a bench on the pier. Roxy and Stella are tied up to the bench besides them. Jack holds the chowder bowl in his lap, using a plastic spoon, eating slowly a he watches the ocean.

Katelynn digs into hers, loving the flavor and dipping some bread in it. “I wonder sometimes..I mean..you keep telling me about the prejudices against Mr. Megamind and such..yet I didn’t really feel it today, you know? I still felt like myself.”

She looked up over at him, looking at the curls of his hair and wondering how he felt with hair for once. Surely it must be a new experience for him. “Is that weird..?”

He smiled faintly and leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her lips, uncaring where they were or who may object to seeing it. “You should always come first. I can be a c-close second. All right…?” Jack asked. “I don’t… don’t want you getting sick.”

“I-I’ll try my best,” she replied, looking quite happy about the kiss. Though inside her mind she still argued that he came first but she wasn’t going to admit that and keep the slight argument going.

Jack could be pretty persuasive after all and she was weak against him thanks to love.

“B-But you didn’t tell me if you wanted one..” She turned to look back at the woman. “We can get one for you and share it before we go back to see about the photos.”

“Katelynn…” Jack moved to her, placing his hands onto her sides gently. “You need to make time. You have to look after number one. You… you’re the most important person to yourself. All right…?”

“I kind of always thought..you were the most important person..” she supplied, giving him an awkward smile, holding the bag with her food in one hand.

“B-But did you want a bowl too? I can get you one..”

He smiled faintly and leaned down, pressing a soft kiss to her lips, uncaring where they were or who may object to seeing it. “You should always come first. I can be a c-close second. All right…?” Jack asked. “I don’t… don’t want you getting sick.”

He didn’t look mad, more concerned. But Katelynn had a habit of blowing things out of proportion like that. Jack looked up at the woman who smiled at him and he just observed her, before looking back at Katelynn.

“E-either way you did just walk away from me. You didn’t even a-attempt to answer. …are you skipping meals again…?”

She winced slightly, paying for her bowl before walking closer to Jack. “N-Not really skipping..I just..don’t have time to eat sometimes..At the museum I manage to get something and eat with Lucy and Marcus and Bernard..but then when I go to the other two..I get busy..is all..”

“Katelynn…” Jack moved to her, placing his hands onto her sides gently. “You need to make time. You have to look after number one. You… you’re the most important person to yourself. All right…?”

“Katelynn are you always just going to walk away from me when I ask you important questions?” Jack asked, uncaring of the treatment being given to his girlfriend at this moment. “T-this is a serious problem. Stop ignoring me. Stop i-ignoring it.”

She turned to him, flushing purple along her ears again and looking quite guilty. “I..I didn’t..I mean..I came to get food here..”

Her heart was pounding so hard within her chest, seeing him angry like that, and at her, she wasn’t used to it.

The woman came back out with her bread bowl, all wrapped up so she wouldn’t eat it inside, and told her the total for her order. But seeing the handsome man with her she gave him a smile.

Jack stopped walking, and looked at Katelynn.

“Katelynn.” he said quietly. “What did your doctors tell you?”

She flushed, still looking at the restaurant ahead and seeing a woman giving out free samples of clam chowder. Allowing Stella to tug on her, Katelynn rushed ahead to take some, sipping it a bit happily.

“Oh this is delicious!” she said, tasting a bit of potato in it. “How much are the bowls?”

The woman wrinkled her nose a bit. “They’re about 6 dollars…”

“Can I have one please?”

She didn’t bother answering, going inside to place an order for her perhaps?
