“I thought so…” Jack said quietly. “I’m doing my best, trying to help her think better of herself. She’s so wonderful and I just wish she could see herself like I do but.. hah… really it’s the same from her to me. Without her I’m really kind of… not the most confident man. But when she’s around I feel like I am. For her sake. But thank you again for calling me, Doctor Brink. I’m going to do my best to look out for her, to help her in her recovery.”

“You are welcome, young man,”  the doctor replied, voice soft. “Take care of each other and I will most likely see you during my rounds with Katelynn. Good day.”

“Good day Doctor Brink.” Jack said as he hung up the phone and stared at it for a moment before easing Roxy off of him. “I think I’m going to go visit Katelynn. She’ll need the company after seeing a doctor… I hate doctors…” he mumbled as he paused to take a few photos of Roxy, if to show Katelynn to show her the Pug was doing well.

He gathered up his things, promised Roxy he wouldn’t be too long, and headed off.

“I’m not a doctor and I’m only saying all this from my assumptions. So… f-forgive me if I speak out of turn,” Jack said as he stroked Roxy’s head as he spoke. “But she told me her parents… pretty much bullied her. I don’t know how far or the extent of their verbal treatment of her but I could tell it was bad enough to upset her just talking about them with her. It might… might be linked to her eating problems. Like I said I’m only guessing. Getting her in touch with her immediate family might… might not help her. At all. Not right now, at least.”

Doctor Brinks stroked his mustache, humming a bit before pulling the file back out to read. “Ah yes, in her report from the counselor it does state bullying from her mother. But she was not pressed for their contact details of the location of her parent’s for the same reason you stated. No, young man, you are correct. The diagnosis is that traumatic experience and bullying from her peers and parent’s have contributed to low self esteem issues and thus her eating problems give her reason to punish herself. That is why she is mal-nourished.”

“Oh I know how to manage my time and my energy Doctor Brink,” Jack said enthusiastically. “I paint for a living and I have so much work to do but I’ve balanced it rightly these past few weeks what with Katelynn and being there for her. I’ll be careful. I will. And thank you for calling me… though I think if you… if you find contacts for Katelynn’s family I don’t…” he hated saying this but… “I don’t think contacting them would be a good idea.”

This peaked the doctor’s interests somewhat. “Oh? You know of her immediate family? Why would it not be prudent to contact them?”

“I’m not a doctor and I’m only saying all this from my assumptions. Since she’s moving in I’ll be over there when it’s time to eat so I’ll make sure she eats as much as you tell her to, and everything else I can do for her.” he said, clenching his free hand into a fist. “I’m going to do everything I can for her, even go beyond that when I have to.”

Doctor Brink had pulled the phone away from his ear a moment at the boy’s exclamation, his brows knitting together though a smile spread across his face under the thick mustache. “That is most excellent, Mr. Maple. Don’t overwork yourself taking care of her either or you might be the one putting your health in danger and then where will she be? Alone again.”

Shutting the file, the doctor put it away so he could concentrate on the current one before him. “So I do believe that will be all for now until she is released in a few days. She is healing quite nicely and all that is left are her legs, but being broken of course those shall take time. Thank you for returning my call, young man.”

“I understand… I… I think.” Jack said as Roxy wriggled her way onto his lap, tiny tail wagging crazily as she sniffed at his face, and he tilted his head back to avoid getting a mouth full of Pug tongue. “What can I do to help?”

“As her only next of kin at the moment, I am telling you this information so you are informed of how to take care of her upon her release,” he replied, shaking his head at the boy’s silly question as if it should have been obvious.

“She needs balanced, large portion meals, she needs to eat more than normal and it would benefit her if she ate with someone rather than alone so someone could monitor how much she eats. Here at the hospital the nurse’s are now making sure but she will be released from the hospital in a few days after all. Her apartment building has the necessary elements needed for her to move around as I asked you before?”

“Yes!” Jack said, startling Roxy at how firmly he said the word. “She’s moving into my apartment block, on the bottom floor. It, it has easy access and ramps too. Oh thank God.

Jack let out a shaky breath and allowed one hand to fall down to the floor, and shut his eyes.

“That’s… that’s good, isn’t it?” he asked quietly. “That she isn’t anorexic…?” Jack asked as Roxy, realizing her daddy had walked away, came plodding over to him and began licking at his hand. He lifted it and pushed it over the top of her head, causing her to pant in appreciation at being touched.

“Yes,” the doctor replied, face serious and eyes still on the file, reading over the details. “It is good news, however, she still has eating problems as she does not eat on her own, without a bit of a push. She lacks a bit of nutrition and am going to require she take multi-vitamins upon her release from the hospital. She will also be required to eat large portions of food in order to stretch her stomach and get her used to eating more.”

“Doctor Brinks,” Jack said in his most serious, I’m not intimidated voice. “It. It’s Jack Maple, you called me about my girlfriend Katelynn Foster…?”

“Ah yes, Katelynn,” the doctor replied, reaching over for the necessary file. “Just a moment.”

He shuffled the papers around a bit before he opened the file. “Yes, I believe I said in my voicemail she attended counseling earlier today for her eating disorder. Now, I had told you in the past when she was in ICU that she was borderline anorexic according to my own suspicions but the counselor has ruled that out. Katelynn is not anorexic.”

Oh thank God.

Roxy, resting by his feet, barely moves as he gets up and moves to his bean bag, away from his work stool and sits down on it as he dials the number.

The doctor sat in his office when the phone rang, picking it up off the cradle and putting it to his ear, looking at the files before him. “Yes, Doctor Brinks speaking.”

“Doctor Brinks,” Jack said in his most serious, I’m not intimidated voice. “It. It’s Jack Maple, you called me about my girlfriend Katelynn Foster…?”

Treatment Plan

[Voicemail] Mr. Maple, this is Katelynn’s doctor. Katelynn attended a counseling session with one of our professionals today and I would like to discuss with you in private the results so we may plan a treatment plan for her. Please contact me as soon as possible at the following number. (Phone number). Thank you. [End voicemail]

Jack listened to the voice mail on his phone, chewing at his bottom lip as he did. He had just started work on a new painting requested by an art dealer but he knew there were things more important than work.

Roxy, resting by his feet, barely moves as he gets up and moves to his bean bag, away from his work stool and sits down on it as he dials the number.
