Jack shivered – she knew how sensitive his ears were. “I’ll call them tomorrow. But until then …” He smiled, wrapped his arms around her waist, and began to sway with her. “I think we have a Valentine’s Day to celebrate.”

“Yes we do,” she replied softly, swaying with him to some invisible music. Separating the space between them, she rested her body against his chest and closed her eyes. “I love you…so much..” she whispered, knowing that no matter what, there in his arms was where she wanted to be forever.

“Just a few idea sketches,” he replied. “I don’t really know how to design cloth-“

But his words were cut off as she kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her and returned the kiss eagerly, humming happily against her lips, delighted that she liked his gift, and his ideas.

She leaned back from his lips just enough to speak, her breath fanning across his face. “Please, I’ll definitely wear it…” Her hands twisted about so her fingers could fan across the edges of his ears.

Jack shivered – she knew how sensitive his ears were. “I’ll call them tomorrow. But until then …” He smiled, wrapped his arms around her waist, and began to sway with her. “I think we have a Valentine’s Day to celebrate."

Another surge of relief washed through Jack. “If you really like it,” he said, “I sent some sketches to a specialty clothing designer. All I have to do is call them back, and it’ll be ready in time for the wedding.”

She pulled back to look up at his face, still floored by it all. He just continued to pile it on and prolong her shock. “You..designed it for me? L-Love..I don’t know what to say..it’s too amazing.”

Deciding to show him her gratitude, she launched herself up to bound her arms around his shoulders, her lips colliding with his in a heated kiss.

“Just a few idea sketches,” he replied. “I don’t really know how to design cloth-"

But his words were cut off as she kissed him. He wrapped his arms around her and returned the kiss eagerly, humming happily against her lips, delighted that she liked his gift, and his ideas.

It was a small linen canvas, not yet framed. The painting had been done in watercolors, giving it a soft, dreamy look. It showed a woman – obviously Katelynn – in a flowing, sleeveless white gown, walking through a grove of cherry blossoms. She wore her hair pulled halfway up, the loose bun decorated with flowers.

But the most striking thing was the cloak she was wearing. It was long and gauzy, white on the top, but swirled and streaked with iridescent colors underneath, and it billowed behind her like a pair of wings.

“R-remember when we were talking about your wedding dress? You wanted to put butterfly wings on it, but I said that would be too over-the-top?” Jack gestured to the picture. “I thought this might be a good compromise.”

It was so beautiful the emotions caused the welling of tears in her eyes. She had yet to go gown shopping but the way he had painted her made her look beautiful and glad that she hadn’t. It gave her more ideas of what she wanted the dress to look like.

“You’re…this…” A harsh giggled caused her chest to deflate in happiness before she was back to hugging him, hand gripping the material of his shirt. “I-I love it!”

He hugged her back tightly as she embraced him. Her hair brushed softly against his cheek, and he nuzzled her gently, feeling better. “And I’m happy with anything you give me. You don’t even have to give me anything, as long as we can be together.”

They hugged and nuzzled a few moments longer, before Jack pulled back a little. “So, um … do you want to open it?”

“Yes.” She smiled softly before taking the offered gift with both hands as if it were something she could easily break. It began to reveal itself once she began tearing away the paper, the apartment filling up with the sound of ripping paper.

Her eyes grew quite large in unison, lips parting to try speaking but no words coming out. “L-Love..o-oh w-wow…!” She could hardly speak as the image before her took her breath away.

Jack’s gaze fell. “Yes, Katelynn. I love all these gifts. B-but you got me so much, and all I have for you is this.” He showed her the present. It was about the size of a sheet of paper, but thicker.

“O-Oh, no, love,” she began, getting up from the couch with nearly clumsy movements. Striding over to him as quickly as possible, she enveloped him in a tight hug, burying her face against his chest. “I’m..I’m sorry! I just couldn’t figure out what to get and thought you might l-like it all. None of it felt like enough. B-But you know I’m happy to get anything you give me—”

Stopping herself, she realized that perhaps he might have felt the same way.

He hugged her back tightly as she embraced him. Her hair brushed softly against his cheek, and he nuzzled her gently, feeling better. “And I’m happy with anything you give me. You don’t even have to give me anything, as long as we can be together."

He bit his lip. “O-over in the bedroom. I’ll, um, I’ll go get it.” From the way he was stuttering, it was clear he was uncomfortable – these days, he almost never stuttered when he and Katelynn were alone together.

Setting the gifts down, he disappeared into the bedroom, and retrieved the item hastily wrapped in red tissue paper.

Falling back from the spike of joy, Katelynn’s demeanor became somber as her hands lay in her lap. Knowing her fiancee, she could read his body language and wondered if any of her gifts were awful enough to get such a reaction out of him.

“O-Okay..” Looking at the gift in his hand when he returned, she turned concerned eyes to him. “Is everything a-all right?”

Jack’s gaze fell. “Yes, Katelynn. I love all these gifts. B-but you got me so much, and all I have for you is this.” He showed her the present. It was about the size of a sheet of paper, but thicker.

As he opened each bag and found the wonderful gifts inside, Jack felt his delight turning to shame. Katelynn had done so much for him, and he’d only prepared one gift for her this Valentine’s. It was a gift from the heart, but it was still only one, and now it didn’t seem like enough – especially after last year, when he’d proposed to her.

“… Thank you,” he whispered, finally. “Katelynn, these are amazing. I, er …” he hesitated. “I made you something too.”

“Really?” With the direction diverted away from her own embarrassing gifts, she bit down on her bottom lip to keep from squealing too hard. She bounced a bit in excitement and looked around the room as if it would reveal itself. “W-Where?”

Jack’s eyes lit up. He’d seen that she’d bought a lot of things, but he hadn’t realized so many of them were for him. It was a little overwhelming, to tell the truth.

“Oh, Katelynn …” he breathed. “I can’t believe you did this!” He looked from bag to bag, eager as a child.

She had tried being creative with each gift, choosing non typical Valentine ideas as she had last year. One bag had a bunch of new paint brushes tied together in a bouquet while another was a small canvas she had tried painting herself – with horrible failure – of a heart with their names on them. From His and Her mugs that came together to hand made sock puppets of themselves, Katelynn had gotten several personalized items.

And each one had her blushing harder and harder.

“Okay, okay!” He backed up as she nudged him out, but couldn’t help smiling. “I’ll be in the living room when you’re ready, all right?”

The blue man took a seat on the couch to wait for her. Stella had been dozing in her favorite nest among the cushions (they’d tried to teach her to stay off the couch as a puppy, but quickly given up), but she woke up enough to come cuddle with him.

Sighing in relief, she took everything out with a hurried pace, glad she hadn’t bothered to unpack a few things. The surprise was probably ruined for some items. Getting out a few gift bags, she put each item in and fretted about his reaction to everything.

“Okay, love,” she sighed, coming back out with several gift bags in hand. “I couldn’t really..decide on anything so I just got nearly everything..” She showed him the various bags in several shades of red, pink, and white with things on them like “I love you” and “Happy Valentine’s Day”. She placed them at his feet before sitting down next to him and being mindful of the growing Bulldog. “S-Sorry,” she giggled, hands on her knees.
