The other end of the phone is quiet for a moment and in the background she can hear a dog barking. “I’m glad, Katelynn.” Bonnie finally speaks, softly. “He’s a rare butterfly who can’t see how beautiful he is but when he’s with you, I see him being so much more than he’s been in the past. I’m grateful for that. You’ve brought out the best in him.”

“T-Thank you,” she replied, feeling slightly self conscious. “I’ve told him the very same in the past..how butterflies can’t see their beautiful wings. He definitely is a rare butterfly, one that I’m so lucky to have found to love. I intend to keep helping him too if he wants it. To not be afraid anymore and hold his hand through it all. Maybe..start a family if that’s what he wants.”

She looked up into the sky, watching the cloud break away to allow some sun to peak through, lighting up sections of the snow and making it glisten.

“I don’t know what his stance is on a family, but you’ll figure that out together.” Bonnie said, “As all couples do.”

“Marry my son and make him very happy. Love him always. That’s all I’m going to ask for in return.” Bonnie replied softly, the usual playful tone of her voice taking a back seat for a moment. “He’s never let anyone hold his heart like he’s let you. Be careful with it.”

Her hand stopped on the pile of snow she had been about to transform and shape, her eyes staring straight ahead and back straightening. Bonnie had always been very kind with her, treating her with respect and Katelynn could always hear the smile in her voice. But her tone transformed Katelynn, becoming serious for a moment.

“Bonnie…I love your son..I understand he gave me his heart and ever since he did I treasured it the best I could. I don’t intend to break it. I’d rather rip out my own than hurt him in any way. I’ve been…foolish in the past with things I’ve done and trouble I’ve allowed myself to get into but no more. He’s the most important treasure I could ever ask for, the most important person in my life. I will never leave him and I will always love him. I can definitely promise you that.”

“April? Well as mother of the groom I have to be there! Just call us to let us know when and where and we’ll be there. Oh! Next time Jack checks his bank statement he’ll see there’s been a generous gift. Call it a make up for not being there when you announced it, okay?” Bonnie asked.

“Oh Bonnie that’s way too generous,” Katelynn whispered, having made enough snowballs and now beginning her snowman, as lopsided as it was. “Geez I don’t know how to thank you..”

“Of course it’s all right, that ring’s been in our family for so long you know? I think it first entered my family in the mid 1800’s so it’s got quite a history attached to it.” Bonnie said, “Honestly though she gave him that ring in her will saying she hopes he finds someone to give it too; I’m sure she’s happy to know he has and that you appreciate it so much.”

“I do..” she whispered, looking down at it a moment still before putting her glove back on. Her hand was getting cold with the chill. “Very much. The meaning behind it and just everything makes it very special to me..Maybe someday you can tell me the history.”

She began to make snowballs again, wishing to get quite the arsenal in case Jack decided to come down. “I was planning for it to be in the spring..maybe during April when the cherry blossom trees were in full bloom. So I was hoping you two could be here then? If it isn’t too much trouble..”

“I’m doing great, thank you Katelynn! Or should I say daughter-in-law-to-be? Congratulations I’m so sorry I haven’t called! We’ve both been so busy and honestly our memories are like nets with massive holes in them, can’t remember a thing!” Bonnie laughed on the other side of the phone, “And I heard he gave you my mothers ring, too?”

His mother talked fast, not allowing Katelynn to reply to something before she was off on another topic, her mouth hanging open. “Uh..oh yes! I hope that’s okay? It’s a beautiful ring and honestly if it had been from a gumball machine I would have been happy..but this ring..knowing it’s an heirloom..it’s just really special to me..I don’t have anything from my side to pass down..”

She took a moment in her snowball making to stare at her gloved hand, feeling the ring rub against the material before taking off the glove to stare at it better.

And like that she’d just left. He watched as she went outside, and wouldn’t at all be surprised if she’d end up making a snowman out there without him after the phone call was done. Sighing, Jack turned back to the magazines but found one for grooms, and began slowly leafing through some tuxedoes.

Outside, on the phone, it was picked up. “Howdy, this is Bonnie.” the woman’s voice said over the phone.

“Hello Bonnie!” Katelynn greeted, grinning and picking up some snow in her hand to make a snowball, phone wedged between her shoulder and ear. “It’s been a while, how are you?”

She couldn’t even wait for the phone call to be over, collecting snow and making snow balls in her hand, piling them up. It was a good thing she had remembered her jacket and gloves before going outside.

“O-oh sorry I misheard you.” he said. “Th-they’re happy, of course they are. They’re just.. s-somewhere in Texas right now I think…” he trailed off in thought. “I-if you want you could call them?”

She nodded. “That might be a good idea, maybe your mom will want to talk about wedding stuff with me..” She grabbed her cell phone and dialed the number, walking out of the room to get a little privacy and still wishing to be outside in the snow for a bit.

Pulling on her snow shoes, she walked outside as the phone rang.

“About the list?” Jack asked as he wrote in a few more names, mostly aunts, uncles, and close cousins. “It looks all right, y-yeah…”

“No silly,” she giggled, nudging him slightly. “About us..the wedding..everything..haven’t you talked to them recently?”

“O-oh sorry I misheard you.” he said. “Th-they’re happy, of course they are. They’re just.. s-somewhere in Texas right now I think…” he trailed off in thought. “I-if you want you could call them?”

“Well we have to invite m-my family too.. funny y-you forgot those.” he said with a small smile, lifting the list and looking over the list. “Of course t-they’d be there any way but still..”

“Oh Jack I’m so sorry..” she whispered, getting up from her position on the floor. “I can’t believe I forgot your parent’s…” She tried to quickly write them down on the list and thought over some wedding plans to include them. “What do they think about it all?”

“So, no on that..” he reached for the list and crossed ‘guest’ off of the list. That was a bit easier since really, he knew about the issues that took place between Scarlet and Six, and expected her current boyfriend would probably lord it up in front of the man who once felt so strongly for her. If those two began fighting…

Then she’s touching his arm, and he looks down at it, before looking at her. “…L-Lady Doppler I’d be fine with but… h-he helped Psycho Delic kill those people in that mall around Ch-Christmas time don’t you remember? O-or when he beat up Scarlet? Wh-when he fought Six? How c-can you allow that… Katelynn, no.” he shakes his head, before looking at her again. The tone of voice he used, it wasn’t one he’d used with her before. With anyone, probably.

That firmness had her backing down, her arm dropping from his as she gave a smaller sigh. “All right..” she whispered, picking up another magazine. Being friends with supers…makes it so hard when they decide to fight against each other.

“But the rest of the list is okay?”

“Well we have to invite m-my family too.. funny y-you forgot those.” he said with a small smile, lifting the list and looking over the list. “Of course t-they’d be there any way but still..”
