“Well true but I also have something else in mind.” he added as they went for the elevator, and it arrived promptly, before he pushed her in and hit the top most button.

“Another surprise?” she tried to guess, a huge smile spreading across her face. “Obviously you won’t tell me what it is.”

“Obviously.” he replies with a quiet smile as the numbers blink on the wall. Soon they open and the cool night air greets them but it isn’t freezing, thankfully. It wasn’t even snowing, the skies open and bright, and the stars shining down from above.

Jack wheels her out to the section where people would normally sit and eat at when the cafe up on the roof was open. He sets her besides a table, and begins messing with the bag on his back.

“Oh I think you’re fine…” he says just as a nurse walks in pushing a wheelchair.

It takes a moment but soon Katelynn is settled into the wheelchair, and has an added blanket wrapped around her shoulders, over her legs, and Jack even sets a hat and scarf into place. As well as some gloves.

“We’re going to watch the fireworks.” Jack explains, “From the roof of the hospital.” he goes around and grabs the back of the wheelchair, and begins to push her out of the room. “I had to do a lot of convincing to allow this…”

She’s really bundled up, feeling nice and warm and smiled over at him warmly in return. “You did? Jack, you didn’t have to do that..We could have watched them from the window or something..”

“Hi, Katelynn. Hi.” he smiled faintly in the darkness, shape only highlighted by the lights out in the hallway. “I have a surprise for you. One of the nurses is going to help you into a wheelchair in a while.”

“A surprise?” She asked, looking quite surprised. “O-Oh I can’t wait to see it!” Tries to talk quietly so she won’t disturb her neighbor but she’s just so excited. “I hope I’m not too heavy for them..”

He had to talk to the doctors for a good, long time to arrange something like this. To allow himself to do this, with Katelynn, on such a night was unheard of but he was passionate in his request. He begged. He even attempted to bribe with a free painting but seeing how badly he wanted it, the doctors and nurses allowed it.

It was half an hour to midnight when Jack arrived in Katelynn’s hospital room.

He quietly approached her bed, and brushed his hand against her shoulder.

“Katelynn…”

She moaned a bit, bringing her hand up to her face, her eyes opening slowly. She had been napping, the medication making her tired but when she looked up into familiar green eyes, she smiled.

“Jack..hi..What are you doing here so late?”

“Hi, Katelynn. Hi.” he smiled faintly in the darkness, shape only highlighted by the lights out in the hallway. “I have a surprise for you. One of the nurses is going to help you into a wheelchair in a while.”
