Taking a Trip

Who was to say. She knew of Megamind before moving to Metro City, and Jack was a version of him… or had she heard about another Megamind? There were too many options, too many possibilities, it was dizzying to think over.

“I’m just glad I did that Google search for photographs of Metro City and found your blog.” Jack admits, linking his fingers with hers as he allowed his eyes to momentarily shut. “Best search result ever.”

She giggled, taking it as a great compliment, a first for her, usually shying away and denying it. “Yeah..” She nuzzled him, the energy boost she had gotten earlier wearing off to leave her feeling warm and sleepy, the movement of the bus lulling her while Jack’s presence felt like a blanket wrapped around her.

She wanted to keep watching outside the window, wanted to keep him company during the bus ride, but her mind fuzzed over, taking a light nap against him.

Jack let her sleep, and worked an arm around her shoulders gently, pulling her against him and rested his head against the top of hers. God, he adored her. How had he managed anything without her before? Look at him, on a bus, surrounded by people he didn’t know, going home again for the first time in a year. With his girlfriend. He never thought he’d have one, and yet here she was, in his arms, so beautiful and so wonderful for him.

He let his eyes shut too, lulled to sleep by her presence and the gentle motion of the bus, and is soon fast asleep as well.

“Mmmhm.” he nodded. “I… I just wanted to get out there for myself, you know? Even if I was terrified I… I had to. My parents won’t always be here, and I have to accept that.” Jack said as he squeezed her hand as he watched the scenery of Metro City go by outside the window as the bus began to drive out of the city, along that long bridge. “So I moved…”

She remembered her conversation with Bernard, remembered the mention of dimensional rifts and ports and got a bit lost in thought, if only for a moment. “Thanks to that..thanks to lots of stuff..we were able to meet at least. I find myself so lucky that somehow we were pushed together. I’m really grateful in fact.”

And she was also grateful knowing they wouldn’t have to part since the portal would never close. She still wondered if she was part of his dimension though.

She leaned her head on his shoulder, snuggling up against him.

“Both. We had our own garden for vegetables, our own fruit trees… l-like I said. Hippies.” Jack had to smile as he leaned into her, resting his temple against hers, shutting his eyes for a moment. “We rarely had to leave our land for anything. W-when… when we got sick we of course went to the nearest hospital…” but then he was touching too closely to the incident with Gail, or when he would break his bones, and that wasn’t good.

“But that’s about it. And maybe… maybe if you climb with me?”

She smiled softly. “Of course I’m going to climb with you, love. I wouldn’t let you go alone after all. I have to catch you if you fall after all.”

She was only teasing really but in truth she really would, taking the brunt of his fall if need be.

“And instead of traveling with them when they went off, you chose to move to Metro City by yourself?”

He smiles at her as he watches her take her photos, watching the world outside begin to slowly move. Jack’s hand found her leg and he touched her, since her hands were busy with the camera he had gotten her.

“Mmhm. We have a stream running through the land. Large trees that Aloysius tried to teach me to climb but I was too scared. Bonnie’s garden is out there too, but seeing how it’s between winter and spring I’m not sure what kind of state it’ll be in… maybe a bit overgrown but it’s still home.” he explains gently.

And they can visit Gail. But she doesn’t know that.

Katelynn tried to envision it, putting her camera down since the bus was moving too much for her to take a proper picture, going through the camera’s album to delete the horrible ones.

“Garden like vegetables or just flowers?” she wondered, having tried to picture everything. Oh how she wanted to try to climb those trees. “Oh and maybe we can try to climb those trees now and see how you do now that you’re older and braver?”

She reached a hand out to rest over the one on her leg, smiling at him.

The bus was waiting when they arrived. The bigger of their bags were placed into the carriage beneath the bus, but Jack kept hold of the backpack he carried since it had his camera and more personalized things inside. Showing their tickets they were allowed onto the bus which was more or less a tour bus since Anderson’s Field’s were quite a way out of the city. A few hours driving at least, though thankfully with only a few stops since there wasn’t ‘much’ out there.

“Oh here…” Jack said, finding two seats somewhere near the back. He let Kateynn move in first before he sat besides her, putting his bag down between his feet.

“Excited? I am.” he admitted on a small, giddy smile. He hadn’t gone home in ages and now he was with his girlfriend. They could stay in his family home for however long they wanted, and head back into town easily.

She had looked outside the windows, peeking from behind the little curtains the bus had before looking back at Jack and smiling broadly. “I am too! I can’t wait to get there already and see your house. What’s it like there? Streams and big trees and open fields and grass?” she asked, reminiscing on pictures she had seen in magazines of big houses.

And it wasn’t long before the bus began to pull out of the station, Katelynn taking out her camera to take quick pictures of the depot before they left.

He smiles at her as he watches her take her photos, watching the world outside begin to slowly move. Jack’s hand found her leg and he touched her, since her hands were busy with the camera he had gotten her.

“Me, run? Sweetie. I look like a new born horse when I run. All legs.” Jack smiles softly as they approach the woman at the teller.

She felt bad but she giggled anyway, holding a hand to her mouth to try to stifle it. “That’s f-fine,” she countered, handing the woman her credit car to pay for her and Jack’s tickets. “Two tickets to Anderson’s field’s please, next bus out.”

The woman swiped her card before handing it back to her, taking their information down and printing out the tickets, telling them what gate and handing them back all their stuff.

Katelynn was going to make sure to keep her stub as a momento and decided anything else she could get her hands on; pamphlets, napkins with restaurant names, etc. It would be nice to remember every detail of their first trip together.

“Really? T-that’s great!” he says on a bright smile. “This will be great, you’ll see.” Jack insists as the depot already came into view, since they lived relatively close to the place. They approached the large building, and he looked at the screens up above them which told them what buses were leaving at what time and where they were going. “Oh that’s it!” he points to the bus titled as ‘Andersons Field’. “It goes near our house, but we will have to walk about half an hour. All right?” he asks.

“Or run it,” she teased, a challenging look in her eye. “Make a sort of race out of it?” She rummaged through her bag, searching for her purse to get her credit card out.

“Me, run? Sweetie. I look like a new born horse when I run. All legs.” Jack smiles softly as they approach the woman at the teller.

He laughs, and shrugs.

“I’m a guy… m-most of us pack super quick.” Jack teases before taking her hand into his, watching as she locks the door with the other one, before tugging her along down the hallway. “So, e-ever done something like this before…?”

She shook her head, holstering her bag on her shoulder as she squeezed his hand gently. “I’ve never taken a vacation before. The most traveling I’ve done is moving here to Metro City.” She looked up at him and smiled. “Another first you have..my first real vacation.”

Outside it was rather cold but Katelynn was too warmed by Jack to notice, cuddling up to his side as they walked toward the bus depot.

“Okay, sure, me too!” Jack calls back and the two exchange one last kiss before separating to their own apartments.

Jack finds his ruck sack and begins shoving spare clothes in, his own camera, some pajamas, his bath things and.. yes… maybe a box of condoms but he throws them in at the very, very bottom of the bag. The last thing he wanted was to find themselves locked in an amorous embrace only being unable to do anything because he had been foolish and forgotten protection.

He calls Minion and explains the situation; his fish friend agrees to watch Roxy, of course. So it isn’t too long until he’s waiting outside Katelynn’s door in the hallway. And yes, he had grabbed his own bag of art things as well.

Katelynn ran around the apartment, packing clothes, purse, her pills, lip gloss, the camera Jack had given her for Christmas, shoes for running around in, sunscreen, bath stuff, and even some lingerie, though she packed that in a private little pocket, blushing. She had bought it spontaneously, having seen it in a store and thinking she would save it for Valentine’s Day.

But now seemed as a good as time as any to see if he would like it.

When she was done getting everything, she hauled it all with her and opened her door, gasping when she saw Jack at her door. “Oh! Wow you pack fast!”

He laughs, and shrugs.

He laughs and suddenly grabs he waist and actually lifts her up into the air, spinning half of a full circle with her, before setting her down. “Oh what fun!” Jack proclaims and nods his head, “Yes, all right sweetie yes. You can do that. But everything else is me, all right?” he asks, before leaning in and presses his lips to hers softly.

Days ago thoughts of his family home had brought him nothing but tears. Now, though, thinking of going there with Katelynn… oh. It would be wonderful.

She giggled, having enjoy the bit of spontaneity. “O-Okay..”

And lo and behold, their apartment complex came into view and Katelynn raced ahead, giggling and being as excited a little kid going to Disneyland. “I’m going to go pack!”
