“Oh she said the usual, c-congratulations and—WOOP!” Jack suddenly rushed past her, his shoes thankfully saving his feet from frostbite, as he ran across the white snow. He ducked down behind the fort she’d just made, and picked up one of the snow balls. “Prepare yourself!” he grinned.

Hair having been mussed up a bit by the speed of which he ran, Katelynn looked back at him with a wide eyed expression, wondering where this sudden change came from.

But she grinned either way, happy he had changed his mind. “Hey you stole all my work mister!” she cried, ducking behind her snowman and quickly making more snowballs, tossing one his way and laughing. “I hope you know I won’t go down so easy!”

“Your snowman can’t save you now!” Jack called back, tossing one of the snowballs, and it smacked the snowman right up the head. “Y-you gotta know how to prepare yourself for battle in war!” he declared as he picked up another and threw it.

“…?” he watches her leave before rollilng onto his stomach so he can talk to his mother.

He doesn’t approach the outside until ten minutes later, and he stands in the door way. “Katelynn, where are you?”

She had been ducking behind her fort, still making more snowballs when she heard his voice, peeking over the top and grinning at him, holding a snowball in her hand. “Over here,” she sang out, getting ready to throw it.

Jack stood in the door way and stared at her blankly for a moment, before pointing back inside. “Um. Aren’t we m-meant to be discussing wedding plans…?”

“Oh yes! Do put him on!” Bonnie said.

Jack was laying on his back on the floor, magazine held above his face as he read.

“Okay one second,” Katelynn said, walking into the house and wiping her feet before moving over to where he was. “Here love, your mother wants to talk to you,” she replied, handing him the phone and kissing his head. Once the phone was on his stomach, she turned to walk back outside, wishing to continue with her snowman and maybe start work on her fort.

“Well we can always just fly in, there’s no issue with that.” Bonnie said.

“Well booking tickets and whatnot takes time..I don’t want it to be so last minute. That will definitely be something Jack and I will discuss soon; a date of when. I’m shooting for next month in the first week because it’s when the blossoms come out as I mentioned…” she said, walking back to her snowman. “And um..would you like to speak to Jack in fact? Sorry I didn’t ask sooner.”

“Oh yes! Do put him on!” Bonnie said.

“It’s not my wedding sweetie, you do it any way you want!” Bonnie said back, laughing. “However way you book it will be beautiful.”

“Thank you,” she gushed a tiny bit, smiling. “I mean I just thought just in case at least I’d ask.” She picked up some sticks, holding them in her free hand and using the other to make sure her phone didn’t fall. “I’ll make sure to give you a call then to let you know the exact details of when and where so we can give you two enough time to come back to the city. I don’t want to rush you.”

“Well we can always just fly in, there’s no issue with that.” Bonnie said.

“I don’t know what his stance is on a family, but you’ll figure that out together.” Bonnie said, “As all couples do.”

“Yeah..something we haven’t fully discussed yet..maybe just a little but I think it might need a bit more..” she whispered, going back to work on her snowman by finding some sticks for his arms. So far she had piled the snow on and he looked horrible but with some proper dressing she hoped he would look proper.

“Is there anything in particular you’d like to request for the wedding by the way? Special requests? Placement? Anything you can think of?”

“It’s not my wedding sweetie, you do it any way you want!” Bonnie said back, laughing. “However way you book it will be beautiful.”

The other end of the phone is quiet for a moment and in the background she can hear a dog barking. “I’m glad, Katelynn.” Bonnie finally speaks, softly. “He’s a rare butterfly who can’t see how beautiful he is but when he’s with you, I see him being so much more than he’s been in the past. I’m grateful for that. You’ve brought out the best in him.”

“T-Thank you,” she replied, feeling slightly self conscious. “I’ve told him the very same in the past..how butterflies can’t see their beautiful wings. He definitely is a rare butterfly, one that I’m so lucky to have found to love. I intend to keep helping him too if he wants it. To not be afraid anymore and hold his hand through it all. Maybe..start a family if that’s what he wants.”

She looked up into the sky, watching the cloud break away to allow some sun to peak through, lighting up sections of the snow and making it glisten.

“I don’t know what his stance is on a family, but you’ll figure that out together.” Bonnie said, “As all couples do.”

“Marry my son and make him very happy. Love him always. That’s all I’m going to ask for in return.” Bonnie replied softly, the usual playful tone of her voice taking a back seat for a moment. “He’s never let anyone hold his heart like he’s let you. Be careful with it.”

Her hand stopped on the pile of snow she had been about to transform and shape, her eyes staring straight ahead and back straightening. Bonnie had always been very kind with her, treating her with respect and Katelynn could always hear the smile in her voice. But her tone transformed Katelynn, becoming serious for a moment.

“Bonnie…I love your son..I understand he gave me his heart and ever since he did I treasured it the best I could. I don’t intend to break it. I’d rather rip out my own than hurt him in any way. I’ve been…foolish in the past with things I’ve done and trouble I’ve allowed myself to get into but no more. He’s the most important treasure I could ever ask for, the most important person in my life. I will never leave him and I will always love him. I can definitely promise you that.”

“April? Well as mother of the groom I have to be there! Just call us to let us know when and where and we’ll be there. Oh! Next time Jack checks his bank statement he’ll see there’s been a generous gift. Call it a make up for not being there when you announced it, okay?” Bonnie asked.

“Oh Bonnie that’s way too generous,” Katelynn whispered, having made enough snowballs and now beginning her snowman, as lopsided as it was. “Geez I don’t know how to thank you..”

“Of course it’s all right, that ring’s been in our family for so long you know? I think it first entered my family in the mid 1800’s so it’s got quite a history attached to it.” Bonnie said, “Honestly though she gave him that ring in her will saying she hopes he finds someone to give it too; I’m sure she’s happy to know he has and that you appreciate it so much.”

“I do..” she whispered, looking down at it a moment still before putting her glove back on. Her hand was getting cold with the chill. “Very much. The meaning behind it and just everything makes it very special to me..Maybe someday you can tell me the history.”

She began to make snowballs again, wishing to get quite the arsenal in case Jack decided to come down. “I was planning for it to be in the spring..maybe during April when the cherry blossom trees were in full bloom. So I was hoping you two could be here then? If it isn’t too much trouble..”
