Taking a Trip

Sally smiled, reached out, and ran a hand down one of Jack’s arms. “Very good.” she said in a tone that didn’t rightly sound correct. “You should stop by our stall Jack, we’ve got all sorts of fruits and vegetables we grow in our greenhouses.” she added. “I’ll give you a discount and everything.”

Jack smiled at her, and nodded his head once. “S-sure! We will.”

She wasn’t sure about the gesture, blinking as it had happened right before her eyes, but Katelynn felt like someone had taken her stomach and twisted it slightly then poured hot lava to hurt her further. Wasn’t that gesture a tad friendly or was she being ridiculous?

Katelynn had never thought to worry over other women before but for some reason she was getting a prickling from Sally.

Sally smiled at him and nodded to Katelynn before vanishing into the crowd, and was soon gone, lost among all the people.

Jack waved after her slightly before looking down at Katelynn. “All right, w-what’s on the list?” he asked.

“Washington? Wow, political girl!” Sally grinned, “I’m kidding, I’m kidding. And yes, we do don’t we Jack?” she asked, looking up at him since she was a mere five foot two next to Jack’s five foot five.

“Mm.” he nodded his head once.

“My big brother used to help on Jack’s family land and I saw him a few times. He was the mystery of the town, back then.” she explained to Katelynn, letting go of her hand. “He rarely left the land.”

She was taller than Katelynn too, making the poor brunette feel rather small. Just a little bit though. But she was interested in learning more about Jack and paid attention to her words.

“Oh then I guess you two are good friends then.”

“Girlfriend?” Sally asked, looking a little surprised at first but then smiled, and took Katelynn’s hand into hers. “Oh it’s so nice to meet you! Are you from Metro City?” she asked.

“Moved there recently actually..from Washington state,” she replied, smiling broadly at the woman. She was glad she was friendly though Katelynn still felt a bit ugly standing next to her. “You two knew each other a long time?”

“Washington? Wow, political girl!” Sally grinned, “I’m kidding, I’m kidding. And yes, we do don’t we Jack?” she asked, looking up at him since she was a mere five foot two next to Jack’s five foot five.

Jack walked along with her, also missing the whistle. After all he was too busy looking around at the stalls. So many familiar faces; though he hadn’t seen them that often what with his fear of crowds.

The fact he was out here alone was getting them some stares, and not just because he had blue skin.

“Jack?” one voice said.

“Jack’s back?”

“Jack left?”

“Jack!”

A young woman with black hair came out from one of the stalls, blue eyes wide.

“Sally?” Jack asked.

“Jack it is you!” Sally said, clasping her hands together. “You’re back from the big city!”

“Y-yeah… only f-for a little while.” he admitted before blinking, and looking to Katelynn. “K-Katelynn. T-this is Sally Marshall. S-Sally, this is Katelynn Foster. My girlfriend.”

“H-Hello..” Katelynn greeted softly, a bit intimidated by the pretty woman. She tried staying close to Jack’s side, not out of jealousy or anything but just a bit of fear. She still extended her hand out for the young woman to shake. “Nice to meet you.”

“Still doesn’t m-mean they can c-call someone names over it.” he said quietly as they began going slowly downhill. In the distance, voices could be heard. They’d be at the open market soon. This time of year they’d have covers up to keep the stalls under, so they’d stay dry.

“You’re right, love, they shouldn’t,” said in such a serious voice, a frown on her face. But she let the topic drop, hooking her arm through his instead, snuggling up to his side as they continued onward, Katelynn’s gaze moving around and taking in all the sights and the people.

There were quite a number out today, it seemed, everyone milling about. It was so bad in fact, Katelynn didn’t even notice when a guy looked over at her, checking her out quickly and giving a low whistle. For as skinny as Katelynn was, she still had a nice bottom.

It was a good thing she didn’t notice, though.

Taking out her list, she tried to figure out what they would really need, her free hand tapping her chin.

Jack walked along with her, also missing the whistle. After all he was too busy looking around at the stalls. So many familiar faces; though he hadn’t seen them that often what with his fear of crowds.

“Mmm. I-I heard about how some ghosts are… ours are just… like.. other tenants. Th-they’re not violent, or mean. Just… just there.” Jack said quietly, frowning softly. “Wh-when I told my school friends they c-called me a liar…”

“There’s always people who don’t believe,” she replied, just as quietly, sobering up with the tale of his past. “But you shouldn’t have let it bother you. Some people have a hard time believing what they can’t see. It’s terribly sad that there are people who are so closed minded out there.”

“Still doesn’t m-mean they can c-call someone names over it.” he said quietly as they began going slowly downhill. In the distance, voices could be heard. They’d be at the open market soon. This time of year they’d have covers up to keep the stalls under, so they’d stay dry.

“Well. I was nine, at the time. I woke up, in the middle of the night… and there he was.” Jack holds a hand up. “A man. A tall man, in a drooping h-hat and big jacket. H-he was stood at the e-end of my bed. Just s-standing there. I w-was so sc-scared I couldn’t scream. Then he just… just faded away.”

The story was exciting for her but she could tell it wasn’t such a pleasant memory for him so she tried to reign in her excitement, knawing on her bottom lip again. “Wow..I doubt he wanted to hurt though..!” She was practically shaking in envy, trying to stay calm for his sake. “If he had..he would have done more than just stand there..”

And yes, she was using her ghost knowledge on him.

“Mmm. I-I heard about how some ghosts are… ours are just… like.. other tenants. Th-they’re not violent, or mean. Just… just there.” Jack said quietly, frowning softly. “Wh-when I told my school friends they c-called me a liar…”

“Well, there’s a few.” Jack said as they walked along a small bridge, him holding her arm to stop her from falling in. “We, we did our research of the area and there was a fire in a family home that used to be where Gail’s field was. Our guess, is, is they latched onto the new home when it was being built. They mostly open and close doors when th-they’re bored. Or open drawers and leave them open.

But I have seen one, though that was a long time a-ago.’

“Oh wow,” she breathed, listening intently to his story, sticking close to his side. “Y-You saw one?! W-What happened?!”

Jack blinked at her reaction but smiled as he continued walking along with her. “Sure, well if anything they’ll come looking for you. New face and what not.” he added on a small smile.

“…you want to ask what they’re like, don’t you?” Jack asked, seeing that excitement in her eyes.

It was written all over her face as she chewed on her bottom lip, her hands cupped in front of her. She had never seen a ghost and after all the horror movies she had seen, she wished she could experience some sort of paranormal activity.

“Y-Yes please!” She squeaked out, walking in an odd angle now to keep looking at him.

“Well, there’s a few.” Jack said as they walked along a small bridge, him holding her arm to stop her from falling in. “We, we did our research of the area and there was a fire in a family home that used to be where Gail’s field was. “It does have a lot of character.” Jack said with a nod, before a small smile crossed his face and wriggled a few fingers at her. “And ghost stories.”

Katelynn had almost tripped on her own feet at that one, catching herself at the last minute, and excited squeal stealing from her lips. “R-Really?!” She asked, looking over at him. Ghost stories, she was staying in a haunted house? Would she be able to conduct a ghost investigation if he let her? Oh she had only brought her camera and not the video camera!

Her smile was huge, a bounce in her step again. “Oh wow! A haunted house! Oh wow! I’ve never…I mean I’ve always wanted to see a haunted house!”

It was pretty obvious her parent’s had her very sheltered and it wasn’t because they were overprotective either.

“Can we..can I go looking for ghosts tonight?”

Jack blinked at her reaction but smiled as he continued walking along with her. “Sure, well if anything they’ll come looking for you. New face and what not.” he added on a small smile.
