He gasped as she had spoken louder than he thought she would. Jack looked after her, before hurrying behind her, eyes wide.

“Katelynn a-are you all right? Are you mad? D-did I do something wrong?” he asked.

She stopped a bit, feeling extremely guilty. Her weird behavior was affecting him and that just didn’t sit well with her. She looked over at him and gave him a small smile. “I’m not mad, love..j-just uh…h-hungry..yeah..Sorry..”

Which she was and wondered if that was causing her weird mood. Though the memory of a hand down his arm and the way Sally had looked at him made her stomach twist again. She continued walking. “S-So where should we go buy..the veggies and fruits..?”

Or was it the baby…? If there was one. The pamphlets had said mood swings, and she was certainly going through some. Jack stood there, awkwardly, before walking up to her and took her hand into his. “I, I know a few other stalls so–”

“Jack!” he yelped as arms suddenly wrapped around him from behind, and he turned to find Sally there. “You weren’t trying to go to one of our competitors, were you?” she asked, hands now settled on the taller man’s shoulders.

“S-Sally I told you… I don’t do that… y-you can let me go now.”

Jack looked concerned as she groaned. “Katelynn, are you all right…? Are you sure you don’t feel sick? Do you want to sit down? I could go and get the vegetables and fruits myself…” he offered.

“No!” Katelynn gasped before she could stop herself. She blushed deeply, putting a hand to her cheek. “I’m fine..really..l-let’s just go get it and be on our way.”

She continued onward, determined to not let this affect her. She was probably making a mountain out of a mole hill anyway.

He gasped as she had spoken louder than he thought she would. Jack looked after her, before hurrying behind her, eyes wide.

“Here you go… you should be careful not to eat too much too fast now,” Mrs. Lee said. “You don’t want to get a stomach ache.”

Jack said nothing as he handed over some money for the bread. “Nice seeing y-you again Mrs. Lee.”

“You too! Don’t be such a stranger, all right?”

“Hope to see you soon!” Katelynn called, waving at the kind woman as they walked away from her stall. “I like her! I hope I really do get to come back and visit sometime..her bread smells so good! No bakery in Metro City smells like that.”

She crossed off meat and bread from the list. Fruits and vegetables was next and this time she couldn’t stop a groan. “Just need the veggie part of the food group..and some fruit…”

Jack looked concerned as she groaned. “Katelynn, are you all right…? Are you sure you don’t feel sick? Do you want to sit down? I could go and get the vegetables and fruits myself…” he offered.

“I’m very well thank you! So, Jack, the usual?” she asked as Mark was already picking up a loaf of Dutch bread.

“Y-yes please. Just a small one, we’re only here tonight.” he explained.

“Your bread smells amazing, by the way,” Katelynn complimented, all smiles now, her hair curtaining her sides. “I can’t wait try it! I’m probably going to eat it all by myself at this rate.”

She was, of course, being honest, except she knew she would never be able to eat that much bread alone.

“Here you go… you should be careful not to eat too much too fast now,” Mrs. Lee said. “You don’t want to get a stomach ache.”

Jack said nothing as he handed over some money for the bread. “Nice seeing y-you again Mrs. Lee.”

“I-I like Dutch bread.” Jack admitted when the woman from the back, who looked like she was somewhere in her sixties but looked at least twenty years younger then that, came rushing up.

“Jack! You blue angel you where have you been? We heard you left for Metro City the day after your parents took off!” Mrs. Lee exclaimed.

“Y-you heard right Mrs. Lee.” he replied quietly, smiling faintly. “I’ve been there since… th-this is Katelynn my girlfriend.”

“Girlfriend oh bless your face you little boy.” Mrs. Lee all but gushed before looking at Katelynn. “Hello!”

“Hello!” Katelynn greeted again, smiling broadly. “It’s really nice to meet you Mrs. Lee. How are you doing today?”

“I’m very well thank you! So, Jack, the usual?” she asked as Mark was already picking up a loaf of Dutch bread.

“Y-yes please. Just a small one, we’re only here tonight.” he explained.

“Oh, Mrs. Lee! This, this way.” he gestured, taking her hand, and led her from the meat stall towards a few other stalls. They pass them, people singing their wares as usual, until the smell of bread hung thick in the air.

A young man around sixteen, seventeen, was at the front of the store taking orders.  Behind him a couple were working on taking some bread out from an old style wooden stove.

“H-Hey Mark.” Jack greets.

“Jack!” Mark, the young man, said. “Mom, Mom, it’s Jack! And he’s got a girl with him!”

Jack blushed. Why was everyone so shocked he had a ‘girl’ with him…?

“Hello!” Katelynn greeted cheerfully, stepping forward. “I’d like to buy a loaf of bread please! Oh and I’m Katelynn Foster, nice to meet you!”

It smelled so good here, causing her stomach to rumble a bit. When was the last time she had eaten? Katelynn couldn’t even remember. The hot chocolate was the last thing she remembered drinking but that was all. And this place smelled like heaven on earth. Dutch bread was her favorite and she saw a few loaves but looked up at Jack, smiling. “What kind of bread do you want?”

“I-I like Dutch bread.” Jack admitted when the woman from the back, who looked like she was somewhere in her sixties but looked at least twenty years younger then that, came rushing up.

“Well it’s still nice to have fresh bread,” Jack said as he kept her close, wrapping his other arm around her gently. “And we can toast it against the fire l-like I used to with my parents. Fruit is good, though… we’ll need that.” he said, whilst resisting the urge to touch her stomach.

Even if she wasn’t pregnant, Katelynn still had to keep eating properly for her own health.

Katelynn began to walk forward, looking through the different vendors for food, finding one that sold turkey meats in the form of slices of bacon and such. Katelynn ordered a half pound of that.

“W-Where’s that bakery you told me about? I’d really like to buy my bread from them.”

Taking the meat, she stuffed it into the bag and paid for it. “Thank you,” she told the vendor.

“Katelynn…? Are you all right…?” he asked, wrapping in arm around her. “A-are you feeling sick…?” she didn’t look well; she looked pale. He suddenly felt so stupid; making his girlfriend, who could very well be pregnant, walk 15 minutes in the cold? What kind of man did that?

She shook her head, both clear the fog and to reassure him. “I’m fine..I’m fine!” she said, bringing out the list. “List though..right…um..”

She checked it, snuggling into his arms a bit now that her mind was clear and she was able to register his arms at all. “Well..you said you brought milk and cheese..we might need some..meat..some bananas..a small bit of cereal..tiny amount of..v-veggies..”

Which meant seeing Sally again. Perfect. She tried to stifle a groan.

“And maybe some bread..I mean..if we’re just staying one night then maybe some of this stuff is..sort of moot..?”

Sally smiled at him and nodded to Katelynn before vanishing into the crowd, and was soon gone, lost among all the people.

Jack waved after her slightly before looking down at Katelynn. “All right, w-what’s on the list?” he asked.

Her stomach still felt twisted and Katelynn wondered if it was because of..that…or because of Sally. She just wasn’t sure, her mind lost in a bit of a fog of insecurities, especially remembering when someone had dared called her “Plain Jane”. That had stung.

But Jack thought she was beautiful. He told her all the time.

His question brought her back as she looked up at him, blinking to clear the knot in her stomach. “W-What?”

Sally smiled, reached out, and ran a hand down one of Jack’s arms. “Very good.” she said in a tone that didn’t rightly sound correct. “You should stop by our stall Jack, we’ve got all sorts of fruits and vegetables we grow in our greenhouses.” she added. “I’ll give you a discount and everything.”

Jack smiled at her, and nodded his head once. “S-sure! We will.”

She wasn’t sure about the gesture, blinking as it had happened right before her eyes, but Katelynn felt like someone had
